Haenon Miyeok is a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon that's only been open a little while but has already become famous by word of mouth. Seaweed soup is the main dish, but it's not just any seaweed soup..!! It's a nourishing seaweed soup with several varieties like flounder, scallop, and beef, and the banchan (side dishes) are a work of art. I'm definitely coming back ✨

When you have an important occasion, a family gathering, or a birthday, there's nowhere better than Haenon Miyeok. Everyone I've brought here says they've never had seaweed soup like this before and compliments it. You really have to try Haenon Miyeok!!! If it's your birthday, they give you one abalone in your seaweed soup plus this mini cake. It happened to be my birthday, so I got a cheesecake — so good ㅠㅠㅠ

Dining room, parking and why tables are full by 11:30

Located near Gwacheon Hoegwan, Haenon Miyeok has a big, spacious dining room. There's a private lot too, so parking is easy.

The interior has an open, high ceiling that feels cool and airy, and the LED walls give it an upscale look.

It's set up nicely for group meetups. Tables are 4-person by default, but they arrange them into 6, 8, or 10-person setups depending on your reservation. ✅There are no private rooms.

We arrived right at 11am opening, and by around 11:30 the place was already full..!! ✅If you couldn't book ahead, call the restaurant to check for open seats before heading over.

You must order one seaweed soup set per person. This Gwacheon favorite offers a wide range of seaweed soups priced from ₩19,000 to ₩30,000-something, and if you really want to nourish your body, the premium seaweed soup with two pieces of abalone is a good pick.

The signature soup is the 'boneless flounder seaweed soup set.' Since everyone picked their favorite ingredient, we each ended up with a different soup — boneless flounder seaweed soup set, scallop seaweed soup set, and beef seaweed soup set.

Banchan and the seasoned boneless flounder

This is Haenon Miyeok's banchan spread. The side dishes come out neat and elegant — it has the taste and mood of a fancy Korean set-meal restaurant. I highly recommend the refillable clam muchim (seasoned clams) and eggplant tangsu 👍

The seasoned, breaded boneless flounder comes as one piece per two people, and it's so good ㅠㅠ You can't get a refill, but since the big bones are already removed, there are no small bones in the flesh either, and being fried makes it crispy outside and moist inside — so delicious!!

Haenon Miyeok is a chain, but because the flounder is boneless, the flesh itself is soft, and when it meets the seaweed soup, the broth becomes really rich.

Everyone who's tried Haenon Miyeok's seaweed soup says the same thing — you keep eating and the bowl never seems to empty ㅋㅋㅋ Each bowl is packed generously and the ingredients are added without holding back. I'm not usually a fan of fish, but I tried this one because the flounder is famous, and now it's the only one I order. Thanks to the flounder, there's a nutty flavor to it.

The boneless flounder sometimes comes in bite-sized pieces like in the photo below, but usually it's shredded finely so it's easy to eat with the soup and rice.

The rice served with the seaweed soup set isn't plain white rice either — it's tot rice, made with hijiki seaweed. ✅Tot rice is refillable too.

If you like scallops, this soup is delicious too. While the boneless flounder soup has a nutty taste, the scallop soup broth feels refreshing and clean. It's loaded with these little scallops.

Seaweed soup really does need beef 😎 It's packed with plenty of bite-sized beef pieces.

The beef isn't tough at all — it's tender, and the broth is light and clean. If you want a seaweed soup with meat in it, I recommend the beef seaweed soup set!

Which banchan you can refill at the self-serve bar

The self-serve bar at Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon is well stocked. There's a self-serve bar near the entrance where you can refill anytime.

The self-serve bar has the dishes that come with the basic table setting — clam muchim, acorn jelly, young radish kimchi, cabbage kimchi, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), and eggplant tangsu. The two items not included in the basic setting are the salad and the seasoned flounder.

Birthday and pregnancy perks: free abalone and mini cake

They run review events offering drinks or jeon (savory pancakes), and there's also a ₩1,000 discount event going on. What I liked about Haenon Miyeok's service is that pregnant guests and birthday guests get one abalone free, and birthday guests also get a mini cake on top of that!!
