Today I'm bringing you a review of a proper full-table spread I had in Busan! Lately, when I'm hunting for good restaurants, I find myself drawn less to places that do one dish well and more to places where I can enjoy several kinds of menu items in one course.

Especially when I want sashimi AND hot pot AND tempura all at once — but ordering each of those separately means way too much food and way too much money, right? So this time I headed to a place known as a Namcheon-dong izakaya with real atmosphere: Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch (대운 남천동본점)!

Where is Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch, and what does the name mean?

Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch is an izakaya at 45 Suyeong-ro 388beon-gil, Suyeong-gu, Busan. It's close to Gwangalli too, so it often comes up when people search for Gwangalli restaurants and bars.

Do you know the term 'daeun' (대운) from Korean fortune-telling (saju)? I was curious why the restaurant was named that, and it turns out there's a really lovely meaning behind it. In saju, daeun refers to the major shift in fortune that happens roughly every ten years of a person's life.

Spending time eating good food with good people who share in your life's big fortune — that's precious when you think about it, right? Apparently Daeun started from that exact warm sentiment. Knowing this meaning before visiting made the meal feel a lot more special than just going out to eat!

What comes in the Daeun Seasonal Course for two?

There were two of us, so we ordered the Daeun Seasonal Course for two at ₩50,000 per person / ₩100,000 total. To cut to the chase: the dishes kept coming out, to the point where I thought, 'wait, this much food for this price?' — we left completely satisfied!

Our course was genuinely packed with variety.

  • Abalone porridge
  • Caprese salad
  • Hoe-muchim (spicy mixed raw fish)
  • Seasonal sashimi
  • Flower hot pot shabu
  • Shrimp tempura
  • Maki
Abalone porridge, the first dish of the seasonal course

The first dish out was warm, soft abalone porridge! Perfect for gently settling the stomach before diving into sashimi and seafood.

Caprese salad served as part of the course

Next came the caprese salad, fresh and bright enough to really wake up the appetite.

Plate of glossy salmon jang

Then came the glistening, plump salmon jang (soy-marinated salmon)! Not too salty, packed with umami — delicious eaten plain and even better as a drinking snack.

The main course: seasonal sashimi at Daeun

And finally, the main dish arrived — seasonal sashimi! The fish was so fresh that every single piece drew a little gasp.

If you've been wanting to enjoy fresh sashimi as part of a proper course, this Namcheon-dong sashimi course will really win you over.

On top of that, the course also includes Daeun's signature dish, the flower hot pot shabu, so it's a really substantial meal. What I liked most was that the food didn't all arrive at once — it kept coming out one dish at a time, like a proper tasting course! Just when you'd think 'is that it?', another dish would show up, and just when you'd think 'wait, this too?', another would arrive — sharing each new dish as it came was genuinely fun.

Pot of Daeun's signature flower hot pot shabu

The most memorable dish: flower hot pot shabu

If I had to pick the most memorable dish of the day, it's without a doubt the flower hot pot shabu! It's a healthy-feeling shabu-shabu made by rolling fragrant vegetables in beef sirloin, and the visual alone catches your eye.

The broth was deep and rich, but loaded with seafood so it never felt heavy — really clean-tasting. Hot broth with meat and vegetables coming together made it the perfect drinking snack. It's exactly the kind of dish you crave on a chilly day, and it made total sense why everyone talks about Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch as a go-to Namcheon-dong izakaya.

Sweet, tangy and spicy hoe-muchim

The sweet, tangy and spicy hoe-muchim made me think, 'ah, this is a course that demands a drink!' haha.

Plate of crispy-outside-chewy-inside shrimp tempura

After the warm hot pot, crispy-outside-chewy-inside shrimp tempura arrived, adding a whole new texture to the course. Finishing with maki filled us up with carbs at the very end — absolutely perfect.

Maki served as the final course of the meal

The tempura was so crispy and delicious that we ended up paying an extra ₩5,000 to order one more. Details like this — even the side dishes being on point — made it clear why this place keeps getting mentioned as one of the hot Gwangalli restaurants and bars right now.
