My husband and I took a weekend trip to Milyang. Trying to figure out what to eat for lunch, a friend recommended a local favorite, so we ended up visiting Milyang Dol Jjamppong.

Where is Milyang Dol Jjamppong and what kind of place is it?

Milyang Dol Jjamppong is apparently one of only two restaurants in the country serving stone-plate jjamppong and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) with crispy scorched rice built right in. It's also said to have had over 900,000 visitors, which made me even more curious. It's located near Milyang City Hall, close enough to other Milyang attractions like Yeongnamnu Pavilion or Yongdusan Ecological Park to stop by easily. So it seems like a great option for anyone looking for a Milyang lunch spot or a restaurant near Milyang City Hall.

How long was the wait for weekend lunch?

We arrived just a bit after noon on a weekend, and sure enough, being a well-known Milyang restaurant, there was a wait. When we got there, about 9 parties were ahead of us, so we put our name down using the Table-ing app and waited. When our turn came up, we got a KakaoTalk notification, which made it easy to wait nearby. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes before getting seated.

Stepping inside, the space felt more spacious and clean than I expected. There were standard 4-person tables along with some tables pushed together, which looked good for families or group visits.

They also had aprons, a microwave dedicated to baby food, and high chairs ready to go, so it seemed like a solid option for a family meal with young kids.

What we ordered

  • Dol Jajang + Pork & Chicken Tang SET - ₩37,000

Apparently Dol Jajang is the only jajangmyeon in the country made without starch, so after going back and forth between jjamppong and jajang, my husband said he wanted jajang, so we ordered the Dol Jajang + Pork/Chicken Tang set.

They also do Naver reviews, so that might be worth checking out too.

After ordering, they first brought out pickled radish, onions, and small plates.

Any side dishes you run out of, you can grab yourself from the self-serve bar. There isn't just one self-serve bar either — they're placed in multiple spots, which made it convenient.

Best of all, rice is provided for free.

What does the crispy stone-plate jajang taste like?

After a bit, the sizzling stone-plate jajang with crispy scorched rice finally arrived. There were instructions on the wall for how to enjoy Dol Jajang, which made it easy to eat comfortably. They also gave us green onion kimchi and chili flakes on the side.

The noodles and seafood come out on a hot stone plate, and the moment it's set down, it starts sizzling like crazy — really impressive. Quail eggs sit on top of the noodles and seafood, and it looked incredibly appetizing right from the start.

On the first bite, it seemed a bit bland, but as it kept simmering on the hot stone plate, the sauce gradually reduced down. After a little while, it turned salty and savory with a much richer flavor.

The jajang sauce was a bit richer than usual with a hint of smoky, roasted flavor, and the reduced noodles tasted like something between regular jajangmyeon and Chapagetti — familiar yet distinct at the same time.

Eating the savory, salty jajang sauce together with the plump shrimp, squid, and crunchy onions gave it a great variety of textures.

A light sprinkle of chili flakes added a spicy kick, so I kept eating without ever feeling like it was too greasy.

And you know jajang always pairs perfectly with green onion kimchi, right? Haha. The spicy, refreshing tang of the green onion kimchi went really well with the sweet, salty flavor of the jajang.

The scorched rice at the bottom of the plate is the real highlight

And the scorched rice stuck to the bottom of the stone plate was a real treat. Gently scraping it up while it was soaked in the jajang sauce, it tasted savory and salty — genuinely delicious. This is something you absolutely have to try before you finish, haha.

I also liked that the hot stone plate kept the food warm throughout the meal. With a dish like this, I think family would enjoy it too, so I'd recommend it as a Milyang lunch spot.

How was the pork and chicken tang set?

After a bit of a wait, the pork tang and chicken tang from our set arrived. It's fried pork and chicken tangsuyuk (sweet and sour dish) topped with a generous amount of sweet and tangy sauce and onions — it looked hearty just from the presentation.

The meat was quite thick with a crispy exterior, giving it a great texture to bite into, and dipping it separately into the tonkatsu sauce and chili sauce that came with it made the same tangsuyuk taste noticeably different each time.

The chicken version in particular, dipped in tonkatsu sauce, really tasted like eating tonkatsu, so I think kids would love it.

If eating just the stone-plate jajang feels like it's not quite enough, ordering the set lets you enjoy a variety of flavors together, which is nice.

After finishing the meal, they had yogurt and coffee ready for dessert, which wrapped things up nicely.

What stuck with me most about this restaurant near Milyang City Hall was the sizzling jajang on the hot stone plate and the savory scorched rice at the very end.

If you're traveling in Milyang and want to try a special version of jajangmyeon, or if you're looking for a Milyang lunch spot near the city hall, it's worth stopping by at least once. Next time, I'd like to bring our daughters along and try the dol jjamppong too.
