On a weekday lunch, I went to enjoy a warm bowl of gukbap (Korean soup with rice) with my parents at Gujeon Gukbap, located at the Jeoncheolwu-sageori intersection in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. Dad, Mom, and I each picked a different gukbap based on our own tastes. With such a wide variety of gukbap and prices that don't break the bank, it was a great spot for a hearty lunch with my parents. It's close to Chonnam National University and about a 7-minute drive from Gwangju Kia Champions Field, so let me introduce it as a great restaurant near Gwangju Champions Field to visit before or after a baseball game!

How to join the review event at Gujeon Gukbap
You can get a seasonal bibimbap worth 9,000 won or a fresh-pressed juice worth 4,000 won!

The Gwangju way: perilla seed powder with chojang sauce
On the table, salt, perilla seed powder, sesame oil, chojang (vinegared red pepper paste), and pepper are all set out. When enjoying gukbap in Gwangju, the perilla seed powder + chojang combo sauce is genuinely delicious! (Great for dipping sundae or offal.)

Inside Gujeon Gukbap: a bright, clean dining room
The interior was decorated cleanly in bright wood tones. Along with regular tables, there's also a bar table so you can eat comfortably even if you're dining alone — solo dining is totally doable! There are dividers between tables, which made for a relaxed meal with my parents too.

Self-serve bar with free refills on side dishes
On one side of the restaurant is a neatly kept self-serve bar. Chives, cheongyang chili peppers, onions, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and dadaegi (spicy chili paste) are all set out, so you can help yourself to as much as you need.

Namgwangju Market chapssal: 45 years of a grandmother's cooking
Just as special as the gukbap at Gujeon Gukbap was the chapssal (glutinous rice dish). They said it carries on the recipe of a grandmother who married from Jeju into Jeolla-do and sold gukbap and chapssal every dawn in front of Namgwangju Market — and they still make the chapssal fresh every day. Packed generously with red beans and mixed grains, the chapssal was glossy and delightfully chewy. It came neatly served alongside seaweed, salted shrimp, and halmaeng kimchi.
The moment I heard the story of the chapssal grandmother from Namgwangju Market, my own grandmother naturally came to mind. She loved this chapssal so much that I used to buy it for her sometimes. Coming across this nostalgic chapssal again at Gujeon Gukbap felt both comforting and a little bittersweet, bringing back old memories.

Free baby meal set for children under 48 months
Gujeon Gukbap stood out for its thoughtfulness toward families visiting with children. Children under 48 months get a free baby meal set designed to help little ones eat well. It includes nutritious bone broth, rice, seaweed, sausage, and seasonal fruit. Parents don't need to order or prepare a separate menu for their child, which makes for a much more relaxed meal. Baby chairs are also available in the restaurant.

Jeju-style bracken gukbap, 13,000 won: Dad's favorite
Dad ordered the Jeju-style bracken gukbap! It's a hearty regional dish made with 100% Jeju buckwheat and bracken harvested from the buckwheat fields of Ora-dong, Jeju, simmered Jeju-style. It arrived bubbling in a stone pot, simmered so thoroughly that the bracken and buckwheat had turned soft. The broth wasn't thin but thick, so each spoonful brought up plenty of bracken. It was Dad's first time trying bracken gukbap, and after tasting it, he said it was really delicious.

Savory, rich, and thick bracken gukbap! (One of my favorite menu items too.) Since Dad said it was delicious, I snuck a taste myself, and the broth was totally my style.
Mom's pick: bone-broth lean meat gukbap, 10,000 won... 11,000 won
Mom picked the bone-broth lean meat gukbap. Made with only trimmed bbolsal (cheek meat) that has almost no fat, it's a gukbap that's easy to enjoy even for people who don't care for offal or sundae. The pale, rich bone broth was loaded with green onion, and scooping with a spoon brought up several big chunks of bbolsal. Low in fat, it was light yet the meat stayed tender and chewy rather than dry.

Mixed sundae gukbap with ampong sundae, 10,000 won
I chose the mixed sundae gukbap, generously filled with ampong sundae (blood sausage), offal, and head meat. Eating it with the rich bone broth really brought out the savory flavor even more.

The thoughtful service touches at Gujeon Gukbap
Mouthwash, toothpicks, candy, and hair ties were all freely available too!

From nostalgic chapssal to hearty bowls of gukbap, Gujeon Gukbap was a great 24-hour Gwangju restaurant for enjoying a warm, filling meal with my parents.
