Mangwon bakery brioche loaf and melon bread: Boulangerie Copain

In short

Boulangerie Copain is a European-style bakery on Huiujeong-ro in Mangwon-dong, Mapo, Seoul, with plaques by the door naming its baguette and croissant bakers as certified masters. Melon bread and a Valrhona chocolate baguette were packed to go and shared with the kids at Mangwon Hangang Park, a 10-minute walk away, while a 7,000 won brioche loaf came home. The vanilla bean flavor in the melon bread and the soft brioche loaf keep Boulangerie Copain on any Mangwon-dong bakery hopping route.

There's practically a saying about "Mangwon-dong bakery hopping" — this neighborhood is famous for hiding gem after gem of a bakery! I love bread way too much, so I make a point of visiting the famous spots one by one, and this time I finally made it to Boulangerie Copain, a place I'd been wanting to try.

Where is Boulangerie Copain in Mangwon-dong, and what is it like inside?

Boulangerie Copain sits at 115 Huiujeong-ro, 1st floor, Mapo-gu, Seoul, between Mangwon Station and Mangwon Hangang Park. The exterior has such a clean, European feel that it catches your eye from a distance.

Even the bicycle parked out front looked so aesthetic — I was already excited before even stepping inside, haha.

At the entrance I spotted plaques showing this was the home of the baguette and croissant masters featured on the TV show Life's Masters — instant credibility boost! They also run a daily time sale from 7pm, with 20% off orders over ₩20,000 and a whopping 30% off orders over ₩30,000! Perfect for a late-evening walk-and-stock-up trip, haha.

One thing to check before you visit: baguettes come out at 10am, and before that time only other breads are available for purchase — keep that in mind!

The jambon-beurre sandwich I used to buy on Kurly, now at the Mangwon bakery

Boulangerie Copain is actually the place I used to order jambon-beurre sandwiches from on Market Kurly — one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. When I heard they had a physical store in Mangwon, I stopped by right on the way to the Hangang park.

Stepping inside, the toasty smell of bread tickled my nose — pure happiness.

Just look at those layers on the croissants — wow. With flavors ranging from blueberry to raspberry almond, I nearly had a decision paralysis moment.

The sandwich corner had my favorite colby jack sandwich and a baguette sandwich, both neatly packaged.

I nearly wavered at the sight of the fig cream cheese baguette, but I held back to save it for eating with the kids and promised myself a next time, haha.

They're thoughtful about their cutting service too — turns out only certain items like baguette, chocolate baguette, and campagne can be cut.

Checking the drink menu to go with the bread, I saw the americano was a reasonable ₩4,000, so I ordered a cool one to go along.

Melon bread and Valrhona chocolate baguette at Mangwon Hangang Park

With a bag full of bread from Boulangerie Copain, it only took about 10 minutes of walking to reach Mangwon Hangang Park. Eating bread outdoors on a nice day — is there anything more healing than that?

We started with the melon bread my husband picked out. Usually the outer crust is hard like a crumble topping at most places, but here it had a soft, biscuit-like texture more like the Japanese original style, which made it easy to eat.

Cutting it in half, I could see vanilla bean specks scattered through the melon cream! The moment I took a bite, the flavor bloomed instantly — the kind of taste that makes you go, "wow, they really know what they're doing with bread here."

The Valrhona chocolate baguette the kids chose wasn't too hard on the outside, so even they ate it easily.

The chocolate had a rich, sweet-bitter aroma — I bet it would pair perfectly with milk!

Brioche loaf, 7,000 won: the everyday bread kids love

Boulangerie Copain's brioche loaf is ₩7,000, and even the meal breads I bought to take home were an unexpectedly high quality.

The moment I opened the bag of my husband's favorite ₩7,000 brioche loaf, the kids were fighting over slices, haha. Touching it, I was amazed at how soft it was — the texture felt like clouds. Thanks to the yeast starter and low-temperature aging, my stomach didn't feel heavy even after eating a lot of it.

If you're planning a Mangwon-dong bakery hopping route, Boulangerie Copain absolutely has to be on your list! For anyone looking to enjoy proper European-style bread in Mangwon-dong, I highly recommend it as a place for a joyful bread shopping trip!
