Mapo Station dinner: sundaeguk soup and spicy chicken feet, Bosseung

In short

Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch is a sundaeguk-bap (blood sausage soup with rice) restaurant on Mapodae-ro, by Exit 1 of Mapo Station in Seoul. For dinner the sundaeguk-bap came with an order of spicy boneless dakbal (chicken feet), alternating hot broth with sharp chilli seasoning, and the soup was filling on its own once seasoned with salted shrimp and chives. Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch works well when one person wants a full meal and the other wants a drink.

I was looking for somewhere to eat dinner near Mapo Station and ended up at Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch. On days like this, there's no need to overthink the menu — gukbap (soup with rice) is just the easiest choice.

A hot bowl of soup with rice is filling on its own, and it's also nice to have a drink alongside it in the evening. Sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) in particular is the kind of dish that works as both a hangover cure and a drinking companion at the same time, which is probably why I keep coming back to places with this kind of vibe. 😂

What I ordered that day was sundaeguk-bap and boneless dakbal. I was going to just get the soup, but I had a craving for something spicy, so I added the boneless dakbal too.

Sundaeguk-bap at Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch: seasoning it with salted shrimp and chives

The sundaeguk-bap at Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch comes out in a stone pot still bubbling away. With blood sausage and meat in it, eating it with rice made just one bowl pretty filling.

With sundaeguk-bap, the best part is always seeing the stone pot arrive still bubbling. I took a spoonful of the broth first while it was hot, then added the rice.

There's also blood sausage and meat in it, so eating it with rice made one bowl quite filling. With sundaeguk, the taste really changes depending on how you season it. I ate it plain at first, then added a bit of salted shrimp and some chives.

Mixing the rice into the broth, the hot soup soaked in between the grains and made each spoonful easy to eat, and with the blood sausage and meat scooped up together too, I didn't really feel the need to reach for many side dishes. I ate slowly at first because it was hot, but at some point I was just steadily spooning up the broth.

And it's a dish that goes really well with having a drink while eating. Warm up your stomach, take a sip, then another spoonful of broth. Maybe that's why I like how, at a sundaeguk place in the evening, people there for a meal and people there for a drink naturally end up mixed together in the same room.

Spicy boneless chicken feet: the drinking snack to order alongside

The boneless dakbal (chicken feet) at Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch is spicy with a hint of smoky char. Since the sundaeguk is hot and mild, having them together worked really well.

Since it's boneless, there's no need to pick out bones — you just pop one piece after another in your mouth. When the spicy sauce lingers, a spoonful of broth sets things right again. Sundaeguk → dakbal → sundaeguk → dakbal. With this combo, my hand just keeps reaching back. 😆

Eating dakbal alone can get overwhelming fast because of the spice, but having the hot sundaeguk alongside made it easy to switch back and forth. Good with rice, and also good as a drinking snack in the evening. Personally, I think I would've been a little disappointed if I'd only ordered the sundaeguk-bap that day — adding the boneless dakbal was the right call.

It's also a good combo for someone wanting a hearty meal and someone wanting a drink to go together. That day, I filled up on the sundaeguk-bap broth and rice, and switched things up with the spicy boneless dakbal in between.
