24-hour gukbap near Mapo Station: pork neck suyuk, Bosseung Hoegwan
In short
Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean rice-and-soup) restaurant just 30 seconds on foot from Mapo Station in Mapo, Seoul. For lunch on a chilly day, the hangjeong-suyuk gukbap (boiled pork neck soup) cost 13,000 won and was ordered without dadaegi (spicy chili seasoning) for a clear white broth, then topped with chives and salted shrimp, with garlicky, sharply spicy kimchi as the standout side. The broth is rich with no porky off-smell, so even gukbap beginners can finish a bowl easily.

Mapo working mom Green Mango's🥭 food diary
What should I eat for lunch today? Lunchtime comes around every single day, and picking a menu is always a struggle, haha. Today the weather was chilly and I suddenly craved gukbap (Korean soup with rice), so I headed to Bosseung Hoegwan near Mapo Station.

Where is Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch and what are its hours?
Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch is on the 1st floor of 44 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul, about 30 seconds on foot from Mapo Station. It's open daily from 00:00 to 24:00 with no holidays, and offers group seating, takeout, wifi, and parking.

There are really, really many restaurants near Mapo Station, but when I want sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) or pork gukbap, I usually end up at Bosseung Hoegwan. There are several reasons, but the soup has no funky smell and the kimchi is delicious. Does delicious gukbap need any more reason than that?

What is Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch like at lunchtime?
It was past the peak lunch rush, so the restaurant had a bit of breathing room.

The modern interior doesn't feel like a typical gukbap joint, and the tables are clean.

The staff were super friendly, and they even had disposable aprons ready so the gukbap wouldn't splash onto your clothes.

Bosseung Hoegwan lunch menu and prices near Mapo Station

The lunch menu is sundae gukbap ₩11,000, suyuk gukbap ₩11,000, and hangjeong-suyuk gukbap ₩13,000. Extra menu items include head meat platter ₩11,000 and sundae plate ₩7,000.
- Sundae gukbap ₩11,000
- Suyuk gukbap ₩11,000
- Hangjeong-suyuk gukbap ₩13,000
- Head meat platter ₩11,000
- Sundae plate ₩7,000
For a meal, I'd recommend the gukbap dishes that are this place's specialty rather than things like samgyetang (chicken soup) or ppyeo-haejangguk (bone soup).

If you come in the evening, there's a drinking menu too — suyuk (boiled pork) or sundae-gopchang jeongol (blood sausage and intestine hot pot) — good for a drink or two. Actually, even though it was daytime, there were already people having makgeolli (rice wine).
Ordering the pork neck suyuk gukbap without dadaegi
Today I wanted pork gukbap style rather than sundae gukbap, so I was going to order suyuk gukbap, but I saw hangjeong-suyuk gukbap on the menu and tried that instead. I don't like eating things red, so I asked them to leave out the dadaegi (spicy chili paste).

While waiting for the gukbap, the order pad showed that the kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) are made with domestic napa cabbage and radish. Got my hopes up. A little later, kimchi, kkakdugi, salted shrimp, and chives arrived.

Chives with your gukbap, and kimchi that steals the meal
If you're from Gyeongsang-do, you'll know pork gukbap absolutely needs chives on the side. Adding chives to the soup is what completes real gukbap. So the fact that Bosseung Hoegwan gives you chives put me in a good mood from the start.

On top of that, the kimchi already won me over just from looks. It's kind of like the kimchi you get at kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurants, with lots of garlic and a spicy-fresh kick. You could finish a whole bowl of rice on the kimchi alone.

Honestly I'm usually not a huge kimchi person, but this place's kimchi is just too good.
White broth full of pork neck, with no off-smell

The gukbap finally arrived. Since I asked for no dadaegi, it came out in the white style — ready to top with chives and salted shrimp!

Pork neck meat is really expensive, and this bowl was loaded with it. The broth was rich, but there was no gamey or funky smell at all, so I figured I could bring a friend who's sensitive to that smell and they'd pass the test too.

You could feel how fresh it was from the springy texture. Even at a butcher shop, pork neck usually costs a lot more than pork belly, so if you're going to choose, I'd recommend the hangjeong-suyuk gukbap over the plain suyuk gukbap.

I was hungry and eating fast, so I burned the roof of my mouth on the very first bite, hahaha.
Is Bosseung Hoegwan worth it for lunch near Mapo Station?
The hangjeong-suyuk gukbap at Bosseung Hoegwan Mapo Branch has a rich broth with no pork funk, so even gukbap beginners could probably enjoy it easily. I finished the whole bowl in no time.
