Following the bread smell into Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch
Let me introduce a place on the Hongdae/Yeonnam-dong street that stops people in their tracks with an incredible bread smell — Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch 🍀

They have a branch in Gangneung too, and it's so famous for good bread that it's been on my Hongdae must-visit list for a while! I had something to take care of nearby, and while walking along the Yeonnam-dong street I got pulled in like I was hypnotized by the toasty, delicious smell. This Hongdae bakery — I didn't even know it was here, but I walked past, fell for it at first sniff, and just walked straight in haha.

What is on the shelves at Mandong Jegwa? One-word bread names
The display case at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is packed with delicious-looking bread. It's stocked with exactly the kinds I always keep an eye out for when I go bread shopping — kind of caught me off guard (p)

The bread names were all short, just about one word! These days bread names have gotten so long, like some apartment complex name, that I can't even bring myself to say them and just walk past. But here it's just "Emmental," "Walnut," that kind of short — way more memorable and it left an impression on me.

I'm a total bread lover who can imagine the taste the second I see it. So many things looked delicious my eyes were spinning — this Yeonnam-dong bakery has the store packed full of bread, so just browsing was fun in itself. Every time I looked I was like, oh this one's good too... this one too... drooling the whole time.

Free samples and staff service at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch
The staff at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch were super kind. While you're picking out bread, they hand out samples so generously, in big chunks — a true Hongdae bakery! Every sample piece was warm and absolutely delicious, so once you try it you basically have no choice but to pick it up and put it on your tray.

I went in meaning just to browse and ended up leaving with both hands full — that's the magical charm of this Hongdae favorite. The garlic baguette, the "butt bread," all of it looked absolutely delicious ㅠ.ㅠ❤️

The five breads bought at Mandong Jegwa and their prices
- Emmental ₩5,200
- Walnut ₩4,300
- Maple ₩4,900
- Campagne ₩5,800
- Rusk ₩1,500

Emmental ₩5,200 and maple ₩4,900: the samples that sold themselves
Emmental and maple were the ones I couldn't resist buying once I tried the samples, they were that good. Subtly sweet with cheese flavor spreading richly through your mouth — my personal best menu items at Mandong Jegwa. The Emmental has actual Emmental cheese tucked in between thick cheddar cheese, and the bread itself is chewy and sweet, so the salty tang of the cheese pairs perfectly.

Rusk ₩1,500: the bread you snack on like a cracker
I couldn't resist squeezing one more in at the end — the rusk, which is great to carry around and pop like a snack.

I used to have a favorite rusk spot in Bucheon, but it closed down and I was so sad ㅠ.ㅠ Finally found a new go-to rusk. Crispy and sweet, this Hongdae bakery's rusk was so good, with a faint hint of coconut flavor. Some rusks have syrup(?) scattered here and there but still taste plainly like white bread — personally I think that's a letdown. As you can tell from the color, the rusk at this Hongdae favorite, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, is packed with nothing but sweet, concentrated flavor ^ // ^) ❤️

Fig campagne ₩5,800 at Mandong Jegwa
The fig campagne was also really good, loaded with fig and cream cheese. This place really knows how to make bread.
Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth a second trip?
If you truly love bread, this is a Yeonnam-dong bakery you absolutely have to visit ㅠㅠ Genuinely delicious and great value for the price. Next time I'm nearby, I'm planning to clean the whole place out. A truly delicious, real-deal Hongdae favorite.
Won over by the kindness, and won over again by the warm bread — thanks for the meal, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch 🧡
