My friend and I met up near Yongsan Station to eat tteokbokki before heading to a show, and that's how we ended up at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점), a well-known tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) spot in Yongsan.

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch at a glance
If you're looking for a tteokbokki spot in Yongsan, Hyeonseonine has to be on the list. We visited around 6pm when things were quiet and had the instant tteokbokki and fried rice — even at mild spice, the sweet-spicy flavor came through clearly and brought back memories of the tteokbokki I ate as a kid.
Starting as a street cart in 2004, it's now a proper restaurant in a real building with 20 years of history behind it — well worth a visit if you're after old-school tteokbokki vibes in Yongridan-gil.
How close is Hyeonseonine to Sinyongsan Station?

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is conveniently close to Sinyongsan Station. Whether you walk from Yongsan Station or Sinyongsan Station, the distance isn't a burden, so it fits naturally into a Yongridan-gil outing.
For couples dating between Yongsan and Sinyongsan, the location works well without much detour, making it easy to pair with other Yongridan-gil restaurants or cafés on the same route.
Is there parking at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?
There isn't a large dedicated parking area around the restaurant, so I'd recommend coming by subway or on foot rather than by car. Being close to Sinyongsan Station, public transit made the visit much easier. If you do need to drive, it's best to check nearby public or paid parking lots ahead of time.
A dining room that still feels like the old street cart

Since it originally started as a street cart, you can still feel that era throughout the space. Looking at the old photos on the walls, it was easy to sense how long this place has been around.

Around 6pm when I visited, it wasn't busy so we could sit comfortably, but as time passed more and more customers arrived until the whole dining room was packed. Watching the evening crowd build up, I could feel just how steadily loved this place is.
Hyeonseonine menu and spice levels

Hyeonseonine's menu is divided into set menus, à la carte menus, and instant tteokbokki, and you can choose mild, medium, or spicy heat for the tteokbokki. Both cooking styles — old-style tteokbokki and instant tteokbokki — are available. Ordering was done by kiosk!

Besides tteokbokki, there are signature items like boiled eggs (2 pieces) and sweet potato fritters, along with sides that go well together like mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll), sundae (Korean blood sausage), fried snacks, and yakki-mandu (fried dumplings). The set menu that comes with tteokbokki, sundae, and fried snacks together is popular too, making it a good spread for sharing with a group.
I ordered the instant tteokbokki and fried rice — the instant tteokbokki comes with rice cakes and various ingredients simmered in a sweet-spicy broth, and at the end you can stir-fry rice right in the leftover sauce. As you'd expect from a menu that's stayed consistent for over 20 years, it felt classic yet satisfying.
How do the mild instant tteokbokki and yakki-mandu taste?

I ordered the instant tteokbokki mild, and it leaned more sweet-spicy than actually spicy. One bite in and it instantly reminded me of the tteokbokki I ate often as a kid — the rice cakes were nice and chewy too, great to bite into.

The portion was genuinely huge — definitely more than enough for two people. There were two boiled eggs in it, which was fun to dip into the broth, and the yakki-mandu we ordered alongside also came in a generous, satisfying portion.

How spicy is the spicy option?
I'd heard Hyeonseonine is famous for its spicy option, and it turns out my sister's coworkers order it delivered often. They said it's spicy enough to blow off stress, and some of them have been eating this place's tteokbokki since back when it really was just a street cart.

Having opened as a street cart in 2004 and carried that tradition for over 20 years, it seems to have become a taste of nostalgia — and a stress-relief spicy fix — for the people who've been eating here from the start.
What stood out at Hyeonseonine

The biggest strength is that, as a well-established tteokbokki restaurant in Yongsan, you get to taste old-school tteokbokki exactly as it's always been made at a place with over 20 years of history. Being able to choose your spice level from mild to spicy means both people who can't handle spicy food and people who want to blow off stress with it can both be satisfied.
The portions were generous, and sides like boiled eggs and yakki-mandu came filled out well, so it felt like great value for money — and the atmosphere, still carrying the feel of its street-cart days, made it a special enough spot for a date too.
