Seonleung eel rice bowl restaurant with corkage-free wine: Manmok

In short

Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant a 2-minute walk from Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer came with her boyfriend just after 1pm, ordered the whole eel rice bowl at 39,000 won, and used a Naver Reservation corkage-free coupon to drink the red wine she had brought with her. With eel grilled twice over charcoal, matsutake mushroom soup and chawanmushi alongside, Manmok works just as well for treating a guest as for a lunch with colleagues.

Manmok, a Daechi-dong favorite I loved two months ago for its hanwoo nabe and hitsumabushi-style eel rice bowl. My boyfriend and I went to Seonleung and I'm writing up our lunch there. Wood interiors, soft lighting, and a Japanese-local vibe make this a proper hotspot worth reviewing.

How to find Manmok from Seonleung Station, and where to park

This Daechi-dong lunch favorite is at 9 Seolleung-ro 82-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, open daily 11:00–22:00 with a break time from 3pm to 5pm. You can try the eel rice bowl from a chef who trained at a Japan 3-star restaurant — good for a solo lunch near Seonleung Station.

It's a 10-minute walk from Hanti Station and just 2 minutes from Seonleung Station, making it an easy pick as a Gangnam Station-area lunch spot. There are 2 parking spots in front of the restaurant, and when they're full you can use the nearby WeWork Seolleung 3rd branch, Samjung Building, or Areumville parking lots.

Inside Manmok: seating and the Naver Reservation coupon perks

It was quiet inside Manmok since we came just past 1pm. Deep wood tones throughout, with window bar seats for solo diners, a long group table, and a spacious 4-person table — a partial wall in the middle keeps things private at this Daechi-dong lunch favorite.

With the Naver Reservation coupon, groups of 4 or fewer get 1 free bottle of corkage. There are also perks for group dinners (1 free draft beer per person), wedding celebration champagne, and birthday mini cake coupons — worth checking before your visit.

You can choose the whole or half eel rice bowl, and dinner brings hanwoo nabe, premium eel nabe, premium grilled eel, and Suntory/Balvenie/Yamazaki/Hibiki/Hakushu highballs — plus a free Ebisu draft beer with a Naver review. Since I placed 1st at the Jamsil Lotte World Mall Guphanjang pop-up, I used my corkage coupon to pair wine with the eel rice bowl ♥ Wet wipes, tissues, and extra bowls sit right beside the table, making Manmok Seonleung a good spot for nearby office workers' business meetings and dinners too.

What comes with the 39,000 won whole eel rice bowl at Manmok

✔️ Whole eel rice bowl, ₩39,000. Served on a wooden tray with an oriental-dressing salad, Japanese-style steamed egg custard (chawanmushi), and mushroom soup, plus radish salad and baek-kimchi (white kimchi) as basic side dishes. Both the plating and the quality of the eel rice bowl feel upscale — a good solo lunch spot near Seonleung Station that also works for treating someone important.

Bringing your own red wine: Manmok's corkage-free pairing

Most places charge over ₩20,000 corkage per bottle of wine, but Manmok lets you use a corkage-free coupon, so I could finish off the sweet-and-salty eel rice bowl cleanly with a full-bodied red wine — a real perk at this Daechi-dong lunch favorite.

There wasn't a separate wine glass, but they set the bottle up to chill and gave us a wine opener, so we enjoyed the eel rice bowl fully from start to finish. Cheers ♥

How does Manmok's twice charcoal-grilled eel taste?

Manmok's eel rice bowl is made by first grilling the eel over charcoal, steaming it, brushing on Manmok's secret sauce, and grilling it once more over charcoal — so it's leaner and cleaner-tasting than hitsumabushi, a good Daechi-dong lunch option. It's a whole-eel portion, so it's genuinely generous, and alternating with the warm matsutake mushroom soup when things got a bit heavy worked well — my boyfriend liked it too.

Smooth Japanese-style steamed egg custard, chawanmushi

The chawanmushi had none of that characteristic eggy fishiness — smooth like a Japanese pudding, another win for this Daechi-dong lunch spot. The sesame-dressing salad was fresh too, good either before or after the eel rice bowl at this Seonleung Station favorite. Each piece of eel had a plump thickness that filled the mouth nicely, with a well-balanced sweet-and-salty flavor you can adjust with fresh wasabi or sansho pepper to taste.

Matcha ice cream to finish the meal at Manmok

I was so full I had to leave half the bottle of wine and some rice, but I cleared every last bite of the grilled eel. For dessert, they offer black tea or matcha ice cream per person — I picked the matcha ice cream ✨
