Daegu makchang restaurant with 3 steamed egg refills: Bongja Makchang

Today my friend and I were craving makchang (grilled pork intestine), so we went to Bongja Makchang, a well-known makchang spot in Jongno, Daegu!

As a die-hard makchang lover, Bongja Makchang is my favorite makchang restaurant! I go to the branch near my house all the time, so when I heard there was one in Jongno, Daegu too, my friend and I headed straight there.

This is the outside of Bongja Makchang. The standing signboards made it easy to find the place. There's a waiting area right out front, so if there's a line you can just put your name down and wait there!

Here's the inside of Bongja Makchang. There aren't a ton of seats, but the tables are spaced well apart so it felt comfortable! All the seats were tables for four.

Side dishes and unlimited steamed egg at Bongja Makchang

This is the basic spread at Bongja Makchang. Chives, bean sprouts, kimchi and various sauces came out. You can grab lettuce and other side dishes yourself from the self-bar!

And get this — steamed egg is a basic side dish here! Other grill houses usually charge around ₩2,000 for it, but at Bongja Makchang even the steamed egg is unlimited. It was so soft and delicious we ended up refilling it three times!

Bongja Makchang menu prices and the self-serve corner

This is the menu at Bongja Makchang. There's seasoned makchang and raw makchang, plus lots of other meat options too. We ordered raw makchang and raw pork belly.

This is the self-service corner at Bongja Makchang, a well-known value-for-money makchang restaurant in Jongno, Daegu. The base spread here is already so generous, and having unlimited ramyeon (instant noodles) on top of that made it feel like an amazing deal. Next time I'm coming back to boil up some jjashuran and buldak bokkeummyeon! This time we were too full to even touch the ramyeon, which was a shame.

Beyond the basic side dishes, there's lettuce, cabbage and various other options at the self-service corner, so you're free to help yourself.

Raw makchang and pork belly grilled with fern, the real kick

In Jongno, Daegu, we ordered a full plate of makchang and a half plate of pork belly. Once you order the meat, the staff personally lay everything on the grill for you — the meat, the fern, and the mushrooms!

You grill the meat together with the mushrooms and fern, and the fern was honestly the real kick. Refills of the fern cost extra, but it's so good that whenever I come to Bongja Makchang I always pay extra for a refill.

They grilled the makchang and pork belly until nicely browned. Makchang needs to be cooked until you can't see any white left, or it'll be chewy instead of tender!

Whenever my friends and I get together we pretty much only eat makchang, so we're all a bit of connoisseurs about it — and everyone agreed the makchang here was rich but not at all greasy, clean and delicious!

Kimchi noodle soup ₩7,000 and self-serve fried rice ₩2,000

Since it's still hot out, we were craving something cold, so we ordered the kimchi noodle soup (kimchimari guksu). As soon as the bowl arrived we were shocked by how generous the portion was. It's only ₩7,000, but the amount looked like enough for three people.

After all the rich, oily grilled meat, the cold noodles made the clean flavor really stand out!

I like rice more than noodles, so I also ordered the self-serve fried rice! It's only ₩2,000, so I really recommend ordering it after your meat — it's a must.

They pressed the rice down firmly on the grill and waited until it was cooked through! Adding the leftover seasoned oil sauce while frying makes it even tastier. It's the kind of grill-house fried rice you could never replicate at home.

Free bingsu (shaved ice) for dessert at Bongja Makchang

Now I understand why Bongja Makchang is known as the value-for-money makchang spot in Jongno, Daegu. Not just ramyeon and steamed egg — even the bingsu is free! And the makchang itself isn't expensive to begin with, so the overall spread felt incredibly generous. The bingsu tasted like old-school red bean bingsu and was perfect for dessert!

With unlimited ramyeon, bingsu and steamed egg, plus really affordable makchang prices, I left Bongja Makchang Daegu Jongno Branch fully satisfied. If you want to enjoy tasty makchang at a good price in Jongno, Daegu, I recommend Bongja Makchang 👍
