What kind of restaurant is Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong?

Today I'm sharing my review of a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant in Sinseol-dong, Dongdaemun, that I'd been wanting to visit for ages after hearing so much buzz about it on social media and TV — Hansang Charyim Bapsang.

Restaurant entrance covered with TV feature posters

This place has been verified as a top-tier restaurant on multiple TV programs, including SBS's <Life of Masters>, MBC's <Live Tonight>, and YTN's <Golden Compass>.

Wall covered in celebrity autographs and guestbook entries

The entrance and walls were covered in broadcast posters, celebrity autographs, and guestbook entries from YouTubers, so my expectations were sky-high before I even walked in.

Can you eat alone? What to know before visiting Hansang Charyim

At the entrance of Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong there's a waitlist along with usage notices. Because the hansang (whole-table spread) comes with a whopping 27 side dishes, solo dining isn't possible, and each person must order one set. One big plus for this visit: there's no break time.

The interior was cozy and neatly arranged, and the owner and staff who set each table were noticeably kind and attentive.

The 27-dish bossam set meal that fills every inch of the table

Not long after we sat down and ordered, dishes started arriving on the table. The Korean expression 'the table legs are breaking' fit perfectly — side dish bowls covered every inch of the table with no gaps left.

Table packed with the 27-dish hansang spread

The set's main dish, boiled pork bossam, arrived glistening and moist. The meat wasn't dry at all — tender and soft, it was outstanding.

Paired with the bossam kimchi, dried radish salad, tofu, and fresh lettuce wraps served alongside, every bite delivered a savory, sweet-and-spicy richness.

What is in the 27-dish side dish spread?

The quality of all the accompanying side dishes was impressive too:

Stew: a rich, hearty doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) arrived bubbling in a stone pot, cutting right through the richness of the meat.

Bean sprout salad and other namul side dishes
Japchae, stir-fried fish cake, and other basic side dishes

Namul (seasoned vegetables) and other side dishes: bean sprout salad, stir-fried garlic stems, braised lotus root, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), stir-fried fish cake, corn salad, braised quail eggs, pickled perilla leaves, pickled radish, and white kimchi — a whole array of home-style dishes, all neatly arranged.

Extra condiments: salted shrimp, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and garlic were also cleanly set out to add variety to the bossam.

None of the side dishes were over-seasoned — everything was just right, and paired with a warm bowl of freshly cooked rice, my bowl disappeared in no time.

Why Hansang Charyim keeps ending up on TV

After visiting in person, I completely understood why so many broadcasters rushed to cover this place, and why so many people line up to eat here. Generous portions, excellent flavor, and a 27-dish spread made with real care — this meal didn't fall short on anything.
