I went to 1986 Shibuya Burger for a burger in Hoegi. I found it while searching for good handmade burgers near Hoegi, and there turned out to be more to look at than expected — from the Japanese-style interior to the well-stocked self-serve bar. This time I tried two menus: the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger set and the Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger set :)

What is 1986 Shibuya Burger like? A Japan-trip mood near Hoegi Station

1986 Shibuya Burger is a handmade burger restaurant near Kyung Hee University. With 'Shibuya' right there in the name, I was curious what the vibe would be, and sure enough there was a bit of a Japanese feel right from the entrance.

Stepping inside felt like stumbling on a little burger shop while traveling in Japan. There were Japanese-feel posters and props scattered around, so it was fun just looking around. It didn't feel overdone — the whole space flowed together naturally, which made it comfortable to eat in. And the staff were really kind, too :)

What I ordered that day: the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger set and the Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger set! For sides, I picked fries and wedge potatoes respectively.

What's on the self-serve bar, from barley tea to the refresh kit?

What surprised me most at 1986 Shibuya Burger was the self-serve bar. It felt like they'd put a lot of thought into gathering everything you'd need at a burger place, all in one spot.

First, there was a wide variety of sauces, so you can freely help yourself to whatever suits your taste. Pickles and jalapeños were also on hand, good for adding in partway through the burger.

Pickles and jalapeños at the self-serve bar

A jalapeño alongside a rich, heavy menu item is just perfect, haha. The self-serve bar also had barley tea. Nice to have a cup while waiting for food to come out, and it was also just comforting to have something to sip on throughout the meal.

There were aprons, of course, and even mouthwash and a refresh kit to use after the meal. Sometimes your mouth feels a bit off after a burger, so having that covered felt like a nice touch. Because of that, I felt this place would work well not just for a casual visit with a friend but also as a date spot in Hoegi.

How does the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger taste? Soft and clean

Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger set

I started with the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger. The bun was on the soft side, and the patty had decent thickness. That said, the patty wasn't dry or standing out on its own — the patty and sauce blended together naturally. Personally, what I liked was that it was an easy-to-eat handmade burger. It was a height you could fit in one bite without a struggle, and the fillings didn't push out to the side or the sauce keep dripping as you ate. It stayed relatively clean to eat right to the end, and I liked that too. Taste matters, but with handmade burgers, how easy they are to eat matters quite a bit as well :)

Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger: a sweet-and-salty combo

Next up was the Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger. Overall it felt soft and the ingredients worked well together.

The cheese and patty gave off a salty flavor, while the onions and the sauce on the bread added a touch of sweetness. Eating them together in one bite made for exactly that sweet-and-salty combo! Rather than any one flavor standing out too strongly, the overall balance was solid when you ate the cheese, patty, onion, and sauce together.

With cheese in the mix, I thought it might feel heavy or greasy, but the sweet onions and sauce kept it from feeling too much, more than I expected.

Wedge potatoes chosen as a side

The wedge potatoes I picked as a side were good too. They weren't overly greasy and ate clean, which paired well as a side to a burger with such a rich cheese-and-patty flavor.

Both burgers compared: which set to order at 1986 Shibuya Burger

Both burgers had good harmony among their ingredients, but the overall flavor impression was clearly different. The Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger was a menu where the soft bun, the thick-but-not-dry patty, and the sauce came together naturally, while the Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger stood out for its sweet-and-salty combo of salty cheese and patty with sweet onion and sauce.

Beyond the burgers, the self-serve bar with its free-use sauces, pickles, and jalapeños, plus a refresh kit for after the meal, left an impression too. If you're looking for a good handmade burger near Hoegi, it might be worth picking the menu that suits your taste and paying a visit :) Which would you pick — the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger or the Shibuya Skillet Nobiru Cheese Burger?
