My friend who's a total foodie has been a regular here for over 10 years, so I went along for a solid lunch. Located within a 5-minute walk of Daemyeong Station, Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch has parking for about 2 cars out front, but the alley is narrow and tight, so public transport might be more comfortable than driving.

Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch was running a discount event that let us try a variety of menu items at a reasonable price. The bulgogi set happened to be on the event, so with side dishes and jjigae included, we could eat a generous meal for a friendly 12,900 won.

Seating at Cafe Dongi for solo diners and big groups

Cafe Dongi's interior is spacious and pleasant, with a group table in the center plus 2-tops and 4-tops, so it works for anything from small gatherings to group dinners.

The long window bench seats also looked great for eating solo.

By lunchtime, so many customers came in that the tables filled up instantly, but the spacing between tables was generous enough that it never felt cramped.

The unlimited self-bar: fried eggs, five-grain rice, seaweed, heotgae tea

One standout thing about Cafe Dongi is that fried eggs, five-grain rice, seaweed, and heotgae tea are all unlimited. Next to the counter, the service bar has an induction stove, pot, and seasoning set up so you can make your own fried eggs. Getting all this for under 10,000 won made me feel the restaurant was truly living up to its motto of "sharing happiness through a meal worth having" — a warm place that really lets you feel Korean jeong (warmth of heart).

They whipped up a fried egg for me in no time before the food even arrived. The service bar was kept spotlessly clean too — 👍

What comes on a Cafe Dongi jjukkumi and bulgogi set meal table

Here's the jjukkumi (octopus) stir-fry set and the bulgogi set we ordered. With the tasting tangsuyuk added as a side, the table filled up in no time.

It wasn't just the main dishes — a trio of side dishes came out too, the kind that make you polish off a bowl of rice in no time when spooned on top. Mixed into the rice, the seasoning wasn't overpowering, making them a great match for the main dishes.

Grandma jjukkumi stir-fry set meal, 16,900 won

Plump jjukkumi (small octopus) and plenty of vegetables sit on the brazier for this grandma-style jjukkumi stir-fry set. Dipped in the sauce, the plump octopus stir-fried evenly with the vegetables had picked up both the vegetables' sweetness and a proper smoky char. Dipped in the mayo sauce, the spiciness was mellowed out too, so it was easy to eat without feeling overwhelmed. Jjukkumi often turns chewy or gets a fishy taste once it cools, but Cafe Dongi's version stays on the brazier grill, so you can enjoy a tender texture all the way through.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was rich and savory, packed generously with ingredients — very satisfying.

Dongi bulgogi set meal, 12,900 won

My friend ordered Cafe Dongi's Dongi bulgogi set. The sweet-and-salty seasoning that no Korean could dislike, paired with a subtle smoky char soaked evenly into the meat, made this a true rice thief.

As expected, it stayed on the brazier, so it was warm to the very last bite.

Tasting tangsuyuk at 9,900 won: the side to add

Everyone, if you go to Cafe Dongi, you have to try the tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). It's made without any flour at all — the Dongi tangsuyuk is fried after fermenting for 72 hours with traditional rice nuruk (fermentation starter).

Fried food often leaves you feeling greasy afterward, but maybe because they use only clean, high-quality oil, I didn't feel weighed down at all. With the sweet and tangy sauce too, it was better than the tangsuyuk at most Chinese restaurants!

Finished off cleanly with some omija (five-flavor berry) tea after the meal.

Is Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch worth a return visit?

A clean store, a filling meal for around 10,000 won, generous unlimited refills, and quality ingredients like Grade-1 geumssal rice grown in the DMZ clean zone of Gimpo — I could immediately understand why Cafe Dongi has stood firm as a Korean set meal favorite for over 10 years. It's officially entered my personal hall of fame for Korean food.
