Beomeo-dong ramen shop compared to Fukuoka tonkotsu: Ryusenso Beomeo

In short

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch is a Fukuoka-style tonkotsu ramen shop in an alley near Suseong-gu Office Station in Suseong, Daegu. On a weekend afternoon visit, the order was Ryusenso, Ryusenso Kara level 2 and tori karaage (fried chicken), as katsudon and ebidon were both sold out. Judged by a ramen lover who has been to Fukuoka more than twenty times, the clean broth with no off smell and the slightly firm noodles hold up against ramen in Japan.

Today it's a ramen spot in Beomeo-dong that rivals the real thing in Japan

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch

That's where I went!

Where is Ryusenso Beomeo Branch, and where can you park?

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch sits right in an alley near Suseong-gu Office Station. For parking, you can use the nearby Beomeo public parking lot, the roadside public parking near Dalgubeol-daero, or the Suseong-gu Office parking lot 🚗🚗🚗

I travel to Japan often, and whenever I go, ramen is non-negotiable — I'm a total ramen lover. I heard this place near Suseong-gu Office does authentic Japanese ramen well, so of course I had to check it out???

I was so excited for spicy tonkotsu ramen, and out front there's a menu board with photos, so you can peek from outside before deciding to go in.

Inside Ryusenso Beomeo: tables and dachi counter seats for solo diners

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch is fairly spacious, with both table seats and dachi (counter) seats, so it seemed like a good spot for solo diners too. It's near a hagwon (private academy) district, so I'd especially recommend it to students eating alone!

What to order on a weekend afternoon — katsudon and ebidon sold out

I ordered three things at Ryusenso Beomeo Branch.

  • Ryusenso
  • Ryusenso Kara – level 2
  • Tori karaage

It was a weekend afternoon, and both katsudon and ebidon were sold out ㅠㅠ

Every table has pickled ginger, danmuji (pickled radish), and minced garlic set out, so you can help yourself to as much as you like.

The food came out fast, which was great since I was starving. I'd had ramen in Japan just last month, so let the comparisons begin. First off, the color looked completely on point — I wanted to dive right in, but I held back to take photos, promise!

How spicy is Ryusenso Kara level 2?

I picked Ryusenso Kara at level 2. Level 1 is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, but I wanted something a bit more fiery, so I went with level 2. I'm pretty weak with spice, but the moment I tasted it, it was sharp and spicy yet totally manageable — great for curing a hangover.

Minced garlic topped on the spicy kara ramen broth

The instructions said to add about 1-2 spoons of minced garlic, so I immediately threw in a Korean-sized heaping spoonful. The broth is on the stronger side, so you actually need more garlic than shown in photos to really taste it. I added extra (garlic lover here).

The proper way to enjoy ramen — wrap the noodles in a piece of rich, fatty chashu. You can also add green onion, chashu, egg, and more.

Honestly, I tore the chashu apart with my hands, shh. Ate it in several bites. The wood ear mushrooms were nice and crunchy too, pairing well with the chewy noodles.

The basic Ryusenso tonkotsu broth — any pork off smell?

The basic Ryusenso menu has clearly had its 'K-patch' completed — the broth had no funky odor at all, just clean and excellent flavor.

I threw in plenty of garlic here too. The broth was clean enough that each ingredient's flavor came through distinctly. Partway through, I sprinkled on some pepper too.

How firm are the noodles at Ryusenso Beomeo?

If you like your ramen noodles fully soft, this might be worth noting separately. Compared to the standard doneness at Ichiran, the most popular ramen chain in Japan, these felt slightly underdone — but I don't like mushy noodles, so it was just right for me.

Oh, and I made sure to eat the soft-boiled tamago first for protein, to prevent a blood sugar crash haha

Tori karaage: how the fried chicken pairs with the ramen

The tori karaage was well seasoned fried chicken — exactly the salty, tender chicken you'd get at an izakaya!

They gave us both tartar sauce and soy sauce to dip in, and the fried chicken came out piping hot, fresh from the fryer. There's no way that combo with ramen isn't delicious!!!!!!

The verdict from a ramen lover with 20 Fukuoka trips

I've been to Fukuoka more than 20 times and eaten a ton of ramen there, and Ryusenso Beomeo Branch really holds its own against authentic Japanese ramen. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a good restaurant near Suseong-gu Office. Bounce~
