Gyeongju walnut pastry shop that ships gift sets in store: Buja Hodu
In short
Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry takeout shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, right across from the GS convenience store. The free sample, a pastry built around one whole walnut, was good enough that I shipped a gift set to my parents straight from the counter, then bought a 24-piece mix of low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha for 27,000 won. Each piece is wrapped on its own, so the Buja Hodu box works as a proper Gyeongju souvenir.

A Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil dessert gift: Buja Hodu.
Why I stopped at Buja Hodu on Hwangnidan-gil
I'm Munjigi, a walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) maniac. It's my go-to snack — whenever my mouth feels bored, I'm off hunting one down. I heard there was a spot for "the best walnut pastry" on my Gyeongju trip, so I had to check out Buja Hodu on Hwangnidan-gil. Bottom line up front: walnut pastries with a whole walnut inside — great as a gift for parents!

Where Buja Hodu is and where to park

This is Buja Hodu, right across from the GS convenience store on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. It's toward Korea Semiconductor Meister High School, and a tall standing sign made it easy to spot.
🚗 Parking info — No street parking, since it's Hwangnidan-gil. I parked at a nearby lot and walked over.

One whole walnut inside every Buja Hodu pastry
The shop is takeout-only, with walnut pastries stacked on the display shelf. They looked pretty plump even by eye, and when they cut one in half for a sample, there was one whole walnut packed right inside.

It was so good I shipped a gift box right there on the spot!
One bite and it was clearly "a real walnut pastry." A walnut pastry maniac just can't resist that. I shipped a gift set for my parents right then and there.

Buja Hodu flavors and prices
Four flavors — low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, matcha, and almond praline — come as singles or in sets.
✅️ Note — Almond praline is limited to 50 pieces a day; when I visited at 3pm it was already sold out. (Seems like you'd need a morning visit to catch it!)

<What I ordered> The 24-piece mix of low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha — ₩27,000
Individually wrapped, gift-ready packaging

Opening the sturdy box revealed each piece individually wrapped with an inner liner — clean and upscale-feeling. Great for eating yourself, but this kind of packaging is especially good for gifting.

Low-sugar red bean: the big one red bean fans rate
Red bean paste is the classic walnut pastry, right? These were bigger than typical ones, so each bite felt properly full. And since the whole walnut is inside, you really get that nutty flavor. Being low-sugar, it wasn't overly sweet — just a gentle sweetness that never got tiring! (I kept peeling and eating them one after another)

Pea cream cheese: the flavor my husband finished alone
Pea and cream cheese sounded like a strange combo, so I was half-skeptical before trying it — but "oh! it actually works surprisingly well." The cream cheese wasn't heavy, more thick and creamy, and paired with the sweetness of pea it was a unique but delicious mix. Even my picky husband said it was good and was sad the set only had 6. (He ate them all himself)

Matcha: a soft matcha aroma in the walnut pastry
I love matcha, so matcha plus walnut pastry is basically "delicious thing + delicious thing," total win for me. Even my husband, who usually finds matcha too much, reacted with "oh, this is actually good." It wasn't an overly strong, bitter matcha — just a subtle aroma and an easy sweetness. Whether you like matcha or not, this one goes down easy.
How did Buja Hodu work as a Gyeongju gift?
The saddest moment for any walnut pastry maniac is watching the pile shrink one by one, right? ㅠㅠ I was thrilled thinking 24 pieces was a lot, but it was sad watching them disappear one by two.
I came in for a snack just for myself, but it was so good I ended up gifting some to my parents too. If you've been giving the same old Gyeongju souvenirs, I'd recommend walnut pastry as a different kind of dessert gift. (My parents said it was delicious too, which made me happy!)
