Where is Ttukbangjip and when is it open?
Ttukbangjip is a charcoal gochujang pork restaurant located at 435 Musimseo-ro, 1st floor, Seowon-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk — the first building you hit on the one-way street heading in from the Mochung Bridge roundabout. It's a special kind of place, open Tuesday through Sunday, but only for lunch: 11am to 3pm, four hours a day.
On days when I want meat for lunch in Cheongju, it's surprisingly hard to find somewhere decent to go — especially when I want properly grilled meat during the day rather than at dinner. I went to Ttukbangjip in Sajik-dong, known as a Seongan-dong favorite that only opens during lunch hours.
These days plenty of restaurants stay open all day, but Ttukbangjip only runs during lunch. You can park right in front, so there's no need to worry about parking.

Charcoal pre-grilling out front and the dining room
The moment I stepped up to Ttukbangjip, I could see meat being pre-grilled over charcoal right out front. Red-marinated pork was cooking away on a wire grill, and the distinct scent of charcoal reached me even before I walked in — my appetite was already going.
As a well-known lunch spot in Sajik-dong, Cheongju, the place was already full of customers, and more kept coming in.

Inside, the restaurant was decorated with wood-tone tables and chairs, giving it a clean, tidy feel overall. I sat down and ordered Ttukbangjip's signature dish: charcoal gochujang pork.

What comes with the charcoal gochujang pork
Ttukbangjip's gochujang pork is pre-grilled over charcoal, so it arrives warm, and ordering meat gets you cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) as a standard side too — a great match for a day when you want a proper meal. While I waited for the meat, the basic side dishes came out first.
Stir-fried zucchini, stir-fried fish cake, napa cabbage kimchi, lettuce, perilla leaves, garlic — a lineup that paired well with the meat, and I liked it.

Finally, the charcoal gochujang pork I ordered arrived. The plate was piled high with meat that looked delicious even just to look at, and best of all, that subtle charcoal aroma drifting up.

Why you don't grill the pork yourself at Ttukbangjip
Since it's not a grill-it-yourself setup but comes pre-cooked over charcoal, I didn't have to worry about grilling the meat myself, which was convenient — and with the smoky char added in, it tasted noticeably different from the gochujang pork I usually eat.

I found this place while looking for a good lunch spot in Seongan-dong, and once you actually try it, you understand why so many people come here for lunch. If you like pork with a smoky char, this should hit the spot.

How did the pork taste?
Take one bite and you can immediately tell the sauce isn't just sitting on the surface — it's soaked well into the meat. If you're looking for a Korean dish in Sajik-dong, Cheongju that goes well with rice, you have to try the charcoal gochujang pork. The gochujang marinade had that distinctive sweet-and-spicy flavor, and it went really well eaten with rice.

The cheonggukjang included with every pork order
You can't skip the cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) that comes free with a meat order. It arrives bubbling in a stone pot, savory yet spicy with a sharp kick, and it went well with rice.

As a well-known Korean restaurant in Sajik-dong, Cheongju, I felt it was a real strength of Ttukbangjip that the meal doesn't end with just meat — you get cheonggukjang included as standard too. A bite of meat, a spoonful of cheonggukjang, and rice together made for a seriously filling lunch.

Put the meat on lettuce or perilla leaves and add scallion salad and garlic for an even better bite.

Self-serve bar: side dishes and ssam vegetables
A lunch visit to this Sajik-dong, Cheongju spot leaves you full. If you run low on side dishes or ssam vegetables, you can grab more yourself from the self-serve bar. It was nice being able to help myself to as much as I needed, at my own pace.

Finishing with kimchi noodle soup (kimchi-mari guksu)
As I was nearly done with the meat, I also tried the kimchi noodle soup (kimchimari guksu). It has its own distinct appeal separate from the charcoal gochujang pork, and the combination worked well eaten together. The cool broth with bits of ice floating on top was a welcome touch — paired with the meat, it felt like it cleaned up the spicy, greasy flavors nicely.

The broth was tangy and refreshing, with noodles and kimchi mixed in, making it easy to slurp down. Between the smoky charcoal-grilled meat and rice, the savory cheonggukjang, and finishing off with cool kimchi noodle soup, I really felt like I'd had a proper lunch.

Is Ttukbangjip worth a Cheongju lunch stop?
If you're visiting Ttukbangjip, a well-known Korean restaurant in Sajik-dong, Cheongju, I'd recommend ordering the kimchi noodle soup along with the meat rather than just meat alone. Ttukbangjip is a place where you can eat a filling meal of gochujang pork with a live charcoal aroma, paired with cheonggukjang and side dishes. It should suit anyone looking for lunch in Sajik-dong, Cheongju, or a hearty Korean meal in the heart of the city like the Seongan-dong favorites.
