Why go to Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch for yukgaejang in Baekseok-dong?

Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch is a Korean restaurant on Handeul 2-ro in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan, specializing in yukgaejang (spicy beef soup). I had somewhere to be near Baekseok-dong, so I looked up good restaurants in the area and ended up at Yukdaejang, which is famous for its yukgaejang.

When the weather gets chilly, I somehow keep craving warm soup food. :-) Especially these days when mornings and evenings are cool, I find myself wanting something hot and spicy even for just a regular meal haha!! I already love yukgaejang and eat it often, and Yukdaejang really won me over — people rave about it as one of the best spots in Cheonan.

Since I usually like spicy soups or hangover-cure dishes, I decided on yukgaejang without a second thought! Walking in, there were quite a few customers there for lunch. Table after table seemed to have people eating yukgaejang, so it must be popular among those looking for a warm soup meal. Overall the atmosphere was relaxed and easy to walk into for a casual meal.

How does the basic yukgaejang taste?

We ordered both the basic yukgaejang and the brisket (chadol) yukgaejang at Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch. The basic yukgaejang was spicy with a fairly rich broth — exactly the style that's perfect for mixing with rice.

How is the brisket yukgaejang different from the basic one?

And then, the brisket (chadol) yukgaejang I was curious about! Adding brisket to the signature spicy yukgaejang broth definitely brought a savory, rich flavor. The nutty, savory quality of the brisket paired well with the broth, giving it a different feel from the basic version.

Personally, I thought the brisket yukgaejang would be great for meat lovers. These days, I don't even need to have overdone it the night before — one bowl of spicy soup just makes me feel completely reset haha. So I think if you're looking for a Cheonan hangover-cure soup or something spicy in general, yukgaejang is a solid choice.

The broth was spicy yet rich, warming me up from the very first spoonful.

Mixing rice into the broth or piling the beef on top

You can't have yukgaejang without rice haha. Mixing a little rice into the hot broth bit by bit, the spicy soup soaked into the rice and tasted even better. Before I knew it, I'd nearly finished a whole bowl of rice one spoonful at a time. It wasn't just intensely spicy either — the meat and other ingredients blended together to give the broth real depth and a savory quality! There were also just the right amount of toppings mixed in, which went well with the rice.

Personally, I think part of the fun of yukgaejang is not just the broth but scooping up the toppings and piling them on rice — eating a spoonful of rice together with the yukgaejang toppings made for a pretty filling meal.

Basic or brisket yukgaejang: which should you order?

The basic yukgaejang at Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch suits those who like a spicy, clean broth, while the brisket yukgaejang is a good pick if you want an extra savory kick. If you're looking for a filling meal in Baekseok-dong, Yukdaejang is definitely worth a stop as a Baekseok-dong go-to.

If you like the classic style, go for the basic yukgaejang; if you want something richer and more savory, order the brisket version. On a day when you're craving a hot bowl of soup in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan — whether for a solid meal or a Cheonan hangover-cure dish — a bowl of yukgaejang at Yukdaejang is a good call :) Finishing off a bowl of rice with the hot broth left me feeling satisfied and full :) I'll have to try other menu items next time haha.
