What kind of restaurant is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap?

On this Jeju trip, staying around Jungmun, I stopped by this famous breakfast spot in Seogwipo, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap! I'd already gotten my hopes up because of the great Naver reviews and ratings before visiting, and it really was a true local favorite — the place was absolutely packed!

Spacious dining hall with many tables at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

The dining hall was really spacious and clean with lots of tables, and the outside parking lot was huge too, so there were even group tour bus guests there! The owner and the staff ladies were friendly, and best of all, the lush green garden view through the windows was so pretty.

I was surprised how many customers there were the moment I walked in, but since the restaurant is so big there were still plenty of seats, and the staff cleared tables super fast! They quickly seated us at a freshly cleared window-side table.

The menu here includes old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (seaweed/lettuce wrap) + abalone hot-pot rice for ₩18,000, fatty grilled mackerel + abalone hot-pot rice for ₩18,000, large grilled tilefish + abalone hot-pot rice for ₩30,000, and abalone sea urchin seaweed soup + abalone hot-pot rice for ₩18,000. Alongside these signature sets, there's also a wide range of à la carte dishes — abalone porridge, grilled abalone, abalone sea urchin seaweed soup, and even pork cutlet — so it seems like a good place to bring kids too.

The basic table setting and the self-serve bar

First, here's the basic table setting they bring out. The side dishes already looked clean and delicious — salad, soft tofu, sweet pumpkin, diced radish kimchi, ssam vegetables, and even dried laver and soy sauce, which I love.

For anything missing, you can just use the store's self-serve bar! There were other things besides the basic side dishes they gave us. There was even sikhye (sweet rice punch), great for cleansing the palate after the meal, so I grabbed some and drank it after eating — it was delicious.

I also brought back japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) and pork bulgogi from the self-serve bar! Wait, this place is secretly amazing for pork bulgogi too, haha. It was so good I wanted to go back for more, but I held off since I still had to eat the main dish.

Today's main dish! Old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap... look at this visual! (I'm drooling.) The combo of old kimchi and braised mackerel needs no explanation. Plus, it comes with a steaming hot abalone hot-pot rice as part of the set.

Old kimchi really wakes up the appetite, doesn't it? It completely eliminated any fishy taste in the mackerel, and since whole pieces of old kimchi go into the dish, it's absolutely dangerous for how much rice you'll eat. The sauce tasted homemade, without that MSG-heavy feel.

How is the abalone hot-pot rice served?

Coming to Jeju, abalone dishes are a must! The abalone hot-pot rice comes as part of the set too. The freshly cooked hot-pot rice is loaded with sweet pumpkin, tot (fusiform sargassum seaweed), and abalone.

It's delicious just as it is — sticky rice, chewy abalone, sweet pumpkin, and the texture of the tot all come together beautifully in this hot-pot rice.

How did the steamed mackerel taste?

Tucked inside the thoroughly cooked whole old kimchi, the mackerel had such plump flesh that it just flakes apart easily for eating.

A plump piece of braised mackerel

No dryness, no fishy taste — just soft, plump flesh that's delicious eaten plain, delicious with the old kimchi, and delicious wrapped up in a ssam too! There was also radish inside, and it had soaked up the seasoning so well it was incredibly soft and tasty.

The sauce itself is deep and well-seasoned, and best of all, it's not spicy! There are so many overly spicy, intense sauces these days, but here the old kimchi itself is the whole kick.

I wrapped it up nicely in a ssam and ate it. A true rice-thief dish I hadn't had in a while — such a delicious lunch in Jungmun!

Why Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap works for family and group meals

On the way to the restroom after the meal, I noticed the walls were covered with celebrity autographs — this famous breakfast spot in Seogwipo, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, is already well known. Since they open early in the morning, I heard abalone porridge is even served during breakfast hours!
