Cheongju rice cake shop 100-day set for a baby photo table: Tteokmama

In short

Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch is a rice cake shop on Gonghang-ro in Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, specialising in baegil-tteok (100-day) and dol-tteok (first birthday) sets. Three days before the baby's 100-day photo shoot, the writer phoned in the Sobok set (45,000 won: baekseolgi steamed rice cake, susu-patdeok sorghum red bean cake and flat honey tteok) and had the Chinese character for 100 added to the baekseolgi; Tteokmama made it that morning and packed it warm, so even the studio staff asked where it came from. Far fuller than the fake display rice cakes, and the verdict is that real 100-day tteok was worth ordering.

Baegil table styled with a Tteokmama Yullyang rice cake set

We did our baby's 100-day photo shoot recently, and you absolutely need baegil-tteok (100-day rice cake) for the baegil table setup. I put together a set from Tteokmama Yullyang Branch, famous for Cheongju baegil-tteok, styled the table, and shot it — it looked so pretty, totally different from those fake display rice cakes, and I felt genuinely proud!!

How to order a 100-day or first-birthday rice cake set from Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang

Tteokmama has five branches — Gaesin, Ochang, Osong, Jochiwon, and Yullyang — and since the self-studio where we shot the 100-day photos is in Yullyang-dong, I called the Yullyang branch three days ahead to order the baegil-tteok set. They told me they'd write the Chinese character for '100' on the baekseolgi (white rice cake). They can also prepare it same-day, and since delivery is free anywhere in Cheongju, that's a great option if visiting in person is hard.

We only needed it for the baegil table shoot and don't eat much tteok, so I went with the Sobok set. They mentioned Chuseok songpyeon (holiday rice cake) preorders are open too — since I can't make songpyeon myself, I might order about 1kg just to get into the Chuseok mood.

Buying rice cakes by the piece at the Tteokmama Yullyang shop

While paying and waiting for packaging, I looked around the store — they sell Oreo sulgi, honey-tteok sulgi, baekseolgi, red bean sirutteok, honey tteok, and handmade yakgwa (honey cookie) individually too, so you can buy in small quantities.

They packaged the baekseolgi, flat honey tteok, and susu-patdeok beautifully, but with the baby in tow it was all a bit chaotic and I forgot to take photos — next thing I knew, the tteok was already sitting prettily on the baegil table haha.

What does 100-day tteok mean, and do you need it?

While preparing for the baby's 100 days, I wondered whether I really needed real baegil-tteok since I don't even like or eat rice cake much, and fake display ones exist too — but in the end, I'm glad I did the real thing.

  • Baekseolgi: symbolizes purity and cleanliness, wishing the baby a long life to 100
  • Susu-patdeok: red beans are believed to ward off bad energy, wishing the baby a trouble-free upbringing
  • Songpyeon, honey tteok: symbolize growing into someone with a full heart and generous nature

Before I looked into it, I thought of baegil-tteok as just something to eat, but once I learned the meaning behind it, there was no way I could skip it. I prepared it hoping our baby, with so much life ahead, grows up healthy, wise, and lives a long, long time.

Made that morning: rice cakes still warm at the photo studio

They made it that morning and packaged it while still warm; by the time the shoot ended I couldn't feel the warmth anymore myself, but the staff setting up at the studio asked if I'd bought it that morning and where I got it, saying it was still warm.

The flat honey tteok was the best of the Sobok set

After the 100-day photo shoot, we brought it home and ate it — the baekseolgi, susu-patdeok, and flat honey tteok were all delicious, but I especially loved the flat honey tteok. Even after cooling down, it stayed chewy and wasn't too sweet, perfect as a snack. I heard it's famous as a thank-you tteok for guests, so I'm seriously considering pairing dol-tteok (first birthday rice cake) sets with dol thank-you tteok next year for her first birthday.

Advice for parents planning a 100-day table photo shoot in Cheongju

Looking at the raw photos from the shoot, seeing the flat honey tteok, susu-patdeok, and baekseolgi all together on the baegil table made it look so abundant. A lot of people rent a baegil table setup and shoot it themselves at home these days — fake display tteok looks nice too, but even the basic set looks abundant and carries real meaning, so if you're preparing for a 100-day photo shoot and need a place open even on weekends since they're open year-round, I recommend Tteokmama Yullyang Branch!
