Why we returned to Black Garlic Salt Bread in Danyang Gugyeong Market

I came back to Gugyeong Market while traveling in Danyang. I'd read a review calling out the salt bread among all the bakeries in the market, so I returned. Danyang is famous for black garlic, so of course the salt bread comes in a black garlic version too. This is the Danyang Gugyeong Market bakery favorite, Black Garlic Salt Bread.

The look of the Black Garlic Salt Bread shop. The exterior is clean overall, and the sign is neat and easy to spot. On my first visit customers were waiting to have their bread packed, so I came back a little later when it was empty and took another shot of the storefront.

How big are the salt breads, and what flavors are there?

It's hard to tell from the photo above, but these salt breads are huge. Look at the first photo on the blog next to a hand for scale — it's the biggest salt bread I've had so far.

"Black Garlic Salt Bread" — only available in Danyang. Made with black garlic prepared in-house from Danyang six-clove garlic and Korea's first black garlic salt, aged 20 days with Taean sun-dried salt, then blended into French gourmet butter with black garlic.

Black Garlic Salt Bread says it uses no preservatives, no coloring, and no chemical additives. Everything is made and sold the same day!!

They also sell Sanghamokjang ice cream. Sanghamokjang ice cream meets salt bread! Ice cream salt bread!! The moment my kid saw the photo, of course, straight to "buy me that" — it does look good!!

Bags with handles: carrying salt bread around Danyang's sights

The packaging for Set 1 and Set 2. I loved that the bags even had handles. A plain paper bag is a pain to carry around, but with handles it was so easy to bring these along while touring.

Ice cream salt bread, 6,000 won

The ice cream salt bread my kid ordered. Made even better by using Sanghamokjang ice cream — the ice cream sits on top of the salt bread, so you get to eat the ice cream first and the bread after.

The ice cream even filled the hollow space inside the salt bread. My kid finished the ice cream, then polished off the bread too, no problem.

Gift Set 1: four original salt breads, 11,000 won

Open up Set 1 and there are four original salt breads inside. Good to pack along and eat when you get a little hungry while touring around. The size really is something else — I was surprised the first time I saw it.

Original — look at the size of the salt bread in my kid's hands. The biggest salt bread I've ever seen. Cut it in half and you notice the butter hole, the spot where the butter sat. Since we'd just come from Gosu Cave, my kid said it looked like a cave. The outside is lightly crisp, and the salty, savory flavor is excellent.

Gift Set 2: garlic vs black garlic salt bread compared

Open Set 2 and this is what's inside. The black garlic and garlic salt breads are individually wrapped, alongside two original salt breads.

Garlic salt bread — there's quite a lot of garlic piled on top. Sweet with just the right amount of garlic aroma. It's a bit like garlic baguette, plus the salty-sweet flavor of the salt bread on top of that.

Black garlic salt bread — Danyang's famous black garlic salt bread. Even the look of it seems delicious... a slightly sweeter, more caramelized flavor than the garlic version. Moist texture, and since it's black garlic, the garlic aroma isn't too strong, so my kid ate it happily too.
