Free flavor samples at a Konkuk Rodeo ice cream shop: Beurre Beurre

In short

Beurre Beurre Konkuk University Rodeo Branch is an American-style premium butter ice cream shop in the café alley by Exit 6 of Konkuk University Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. Before ordering at the kiosk, this visit tasted the mango and lemon samples, then chose two 4,700-won single cups — Eomchindal strawberry and Cooba Cooba — and ate them at the small seating area inside the shop, where the dense, never-icy texture felt different from gelato. Anyone who likes rich, milky butter ice cream will find Beurre Beurre a dead-on match.

Back in the day, ice cream meant Baskin Robbins, full stop. But walking around these days, I keep running into ice cream franchises I've never seen before. I was out in Konkuk and spotted a shop called Beurre Beurre, so curiosity got the better of me and I walked right in.

Konkuk Street was where my friends and I used to hang out a ton back in college, but I hadn't been in years and the street has changed a lot.

View of the café alley in Konkuk

I was especially surprised by how many Chinese bubble tea shops and Chinese franchise restaurants have moved in. If you and your friends ever want to eat something a bit different, Konkuk might be worth a trip now.

At first I assumed it was another one of those gelato places popping up everywhere lately, but it turned out to be a heavier ice cream made with American-style premium butter.

Is there a Culinary Class Wars collaboration flavor?

Apparently they recently released a menu item collaborating with Chef Shin Hyeon-do from Culinary Class Wars. There's an ice cream called 'Dasima Galchilsonya' and honestly I have zero idea what that flavor is even supposed to be.

How many flavors does the Konkuk branch have, and can you taste them first?

Once inside, it was time to properly check out the ice cream. The variety was pretty wide — the Konkuk branch of Beurre Beurre had over 15 flavors on offer.

Kiosk inside the store

Ordering was easy through the kiosk. If you're torn on what flavor to get, you can ask for a taste first, just like at Baskin Robbins, and try the ones you're curious about before deciding.

You can pick anywhere from one flavor up to four. Getting a quart to go seems like a great option if you want a family-size stash to dig into at home over several days.

Which Beurre Beurre flavors are worth ordering?

Sherbet-textured lemon ice cream
Refreshing mango ice cream

There were definitely a lot of rich, buttery-heavy flavors on offer. If you prefer something lighter and refreshing, I'd recommend the sherbet-textured lemon or mango.

Cookie ice cream on display
Strawberry ice cream on display

There are also crowd-pleasing basics like chocolate, cookie, and strawberry, so it's an easy grab-and-go treat on a hot day.

How big is a 4,700-won single cup at Beurre Beurre?

My friend and I each ordered a single cup, and they packed them in nice and full.

Round scoops of butter ice cream

Neatly rolled into round scoops. Can you tell how the ice cream spreads out in texture? It's soft yet dense in a way that's totally different from gelato. If you're into the rich, milky butter ice cream you get in the US or Australia, this will hit exactly the right note for you.

What this visit ordered, and the seats inside Beurre Beurre

  • Single cup ₩4,700 x2 — Eomchindal / Cooba Cooba

There's a small dine-in seating area tucked into a corner of the shop, so we sat and ate there. I thought about getting a cone but figured it'd be a hassle once it started melting, so I went with a cup instead.

Cooba Cooba: the pick for Oreo lovers

My friend and I tried samples of mango and lemon, but that day I was craving something dense and sweet, so I went with a cookie flavor.

Cross-section of ice cream mixed with Oreo cookies

Oreo cookie pieces are mixed evenly throughout the milky ice cream — soft with the occasional crunchy Oreo bite, always a reliable flavor. It's on the sweeter side, so it's great for a proper sugar rush.

Eomchindal: sweet-tart strawberry butter ice cream

Eomchindal strawberry single cup

Eomchindal is packed with bright, refreshing strawberry. You can bite into whole strawberry pieces, and the texture was neither too light nor heavy, just smooth. It's made with strawberry syrup rather than artificial strawberry flavoring, so it tastes like real strawberry milk — something everyone can enjoy.

A dense spoonful of strawberry ice cream

Probably because of the high dairy content, it wasn't icy at all and had a nice dense, chewy texture.
