Jumunjin sashimi restaurant for a dinner at your stay: Ilchul Hoetjip

Jumunjin sashimi takeout that's perfect for eating at your Gangneung lodging — Ilchul Hoetjip is delicious.

Whenever I travel to Gangneung or Jumunjin, I end up stopping by the fish market at least once. This time in Jumunjin, I was trying to figure out an easy dinner to eat back at my lodging, so I decided to get sashimi takeout from one of the Jumunjin sashimi restaurants. There are so many sashimi restaurants inside the market that I wasn't sure which one to pick, but I ended up stopping at Ilchul Hoetjip in Jumunjin Fish Market and got halibut (gwangeo) and rockfish (wooruk) to go.

Eating sashimi fresh at the restaurant is great too, but on a trip, there's something so nice about going back to the lodging, changing into comfy clothes, and having a bite of sashimi with a drink.

Where is Ilchul Hoetjip, and where do you park?

Ilchul Hoetjip is located at 4 Sijang 2-gil, Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, inside Jumunjin Fish Market. It's open daily from 10 AM to 9 PM~

If you're driving, it's convenient to use the Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower across from the fish market. They give you a 1-hour parking voucher when you buy from Ilchul Hoetjip, so it works out well if you're just popping in for takeout. I actually parked on the roadside haha, turns out that's fine too.

It wasn't hard to find once I came in through the market entrance. Since the shops are packed tightly together, it can be a little confusing at first, but as you head further in, Ilchul Hoetjip shows up on the right.

Takeout or dine-in at Ilchul Hoetjip

My goal that day was takeout, but Ilchul Hoetjip also has tables set up inside. Some people were eating sashimi right there in the market, and there were a steady number of people like me packing it up to eat back at their lodging.

The tanks were kept clean overall, and they started preparing the sashimi right after I ordered, so I didn't have to wait long.

On a trip, the schedule is often packed, so waiting a long time just for takeout can be kind of tiring. Getting it quickly and moving on was really convenient.

What's on the menu and what comes in the takeout box

Ilchul Hoetjip has all kinds of menu items besides halibut, like salmon, yellowtail, and seasonal assorted sashimi, so you can order whichever fish you want. We ordered halibut and rockfish.

Honestly, I thought it would just be sashimi in the package, but when I opened it up — they threw in extra seafood too!! Legendary!

The halibut and rockfish were sliced and packed nicely, and with the extra seafood to go alongside, laying it all out on the table at the lodging turned into quite a generous spread.

When you're eating sashimi at your lodging while traveling, it's a hassle to prepare a bunch of extra stuff, but having it all packed up in one go made it so easy. It was great just on its own, and it also paired well with some ramyeon or simple drinking snacks from nearby.

Springy rockfish, chewy halibut

I tried the rockfish first. It had a springy, firm texture when I chewed it, and dipping it lightly in soy sauce brought out a clean, mild flavor.

Personally, I tend to lose my appetite for sashimi the moment even a hint of fishy smell comes up, but the sashimi we took home from Ilchul Hoetjip that day was easy to eat without any hesitation.

The halibut was a bit softer and chewier than the rockfish. Ordering both kinds together was fun since you get to switch back and forth instead of eating just one the whole time.

It was tasty dipped in chogochujang (vinegared chili paste) or soy sauce, and wrapping it in lettuce with garlic and chili gave it yet another flavor to enjoy.

Jumunjin sashimi takeout, eaten back at the room

Hunting down good restaurants while traveling is fun, but on a day when you've been out and about all day, eating dinner out too can be surprisingly tiring. That's when stopping by Jumunjin Fish Market for sashimi takeout to eat at your lodging feels like a really good choice.

We went back to our lodging that day and ate the halibut and rockfish sitting comfortably, and it had a different kind of relaxed feeling compared to eating out. After washing up and changing into comfy clothes, having a bite of sashimi with a drink really made it feel like a trip. This would especially suit a family trip or a pension stay, since everyone can eat comfortably at their own pace.

Is Ilchul Hoetjip worth it for sashimi takeout in Jumunjin?

There are so many sashimi restaurants in Jumunjin Fish Market that it can be hard to decide where to go on your first visit. Ilchul Hoetjip, which we visited this time, was close to the parking tower and easy to get to, and both the halibut and rockfish had good texture — we enjoyed the meal.

What I liked most was how neatly the sashimi was packed, making it easy to bring back to the lodging and just lay it all out right away. If you're looking for dinner or a late-night snack to eat at your lodging during a Jumunjin trip, I'd recommend stopping by the fish market for some fresh sashimi takeout. If we're ever in Jumunjin again, we're planning to stop by once more whenever we're craving sashimi~haha.
