My husband and I ate at Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch after walking around Ilsan Lake Park. We ordered the Luxury Sushi 12-piece set and kaisendon and split the thick cuts of fish and variety of seafood between us. Let me walk you through the menu and parking info, including the MCT shopping complex lot and its up to 5 hours of free parking.

My husband and I went to Ilsan Lake Park for a walk and ended up eating at Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch too. It's right in front of the lake park, so it was a great spot to stop by before or after a walk. We ordered one Luxury Sushi set and one kaisendon to share, and the fish was thick and varied enough that eating together was really fun. Here's my review of this Ilsan sushi restaurant that pairs perfectly with a park walk!

Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is located in the MCT shopping complex right across from Ilsan Lake Park, which made it a great spot for us to head to after our park walk.

Inside Hwangje Sushi Ilsan: seating and the self-serve bar

I stepped inside Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch. The wood interior paired with white tables gave off a clean, tidy vibe overall. Thanks to the bright lighting, the space didn't feel heavy, making it comfortable for a meal.

Dining hall with table seating and bar seats along the wall

In the dining hall there were tables facing each other as well as bar seats lined up along the wall. It looked great for solo sushi dining or for sitting side-by-side as a couple.

Various sake bottles were displayed throughout the restaurant. Each bottle had a different label, so it was fun to browse them like interior decor.

Next to the beverage fridge was a self-serve bar. There were small plates, shichimi pepper, and miso soup available to take as much as you needed.

Personally, I was glad to see Sapporo and Ebisu on draft. When you're eating sushi or sashimi, sometimes a cold beer just hits the spot, right? Hwangje Sushi sells both Sapporo and Ebisu draft beer, so you can pick whichever suits your taste.

One thing to note, though — the restroom is outside the restaurant in the shopping complex. Exit the restaurant, turn right into the complex entrance, and go straight; it's on the right side. No passcode needed, just so you know!

Menu and what the couple ordered: Luxury Sushi 12p and kaisendon

As a sushi restaurant that uses aged fish, Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch had a wide variety of menu options — from assorted sushi platters and lunch sets to sake-don, kaisendon, and futomaki. Since we wanted both sushi and a rice bowl with a mix of raw fish, we chose the Luxury Sushi set and kaisendon.

We ordered right from our seats using the tablet order system.

  • Luxury Sushi 12p ₩31,000
  • Kaisendon ₩29,000
  • (review) 2 pieces of fried shrimp

Even with some of the same fish involved, eating finished pieces of sushi one by one feels different from mixing your own rice bowl — a nice combo for two people to split.

Notice for the Naver photo review event

Since writing a Naver photo review got us 2 pieces of fried shrimp, I went ahead and joined that event too :)

How is the Luxury Sushi 12-piece set at 31,000 won?

The Luxury Sushi arrived with 12 neatly arranged pieces. Beyond sea bream, salmon, and tuna, the lineup included flounder anki mo (monkfish liver), aged flounder, soy-marinated shrimp, grilled shrimp, and even beef.

What caught my eye most was the size of the fish. It wasn't a thin slice laid over the rice — it was thick and long, giving each piece real presence when picked up.

Flounder anki mo

The flounder anki mo sushi combined mild flounder with a rich, savory topping. Behind the flounder's chewy texture, the anki mo on top melted smoothly, giving a different feel from plain flounder sushi.

The sea bream had a firm bite while chewing, and the tuna had soft flesh with great umami. Alternating between white fish and tuna sushi made the differences in taste and texture stand out even more.

The tuna sushi couldn't be skipped either. The akami (lean red meat) had a savory richness from the red flesh, while the otoro and chutoro left a deeper, oilier richness behind. Even with the same fish, the flavor changed noticeably depending on the cut, which made for fun comparison eating.

Aged flounder with kimchi, cooked shrimp, and beef sushi

From aged flounder with kimchi to cooked shrimp and beef, there was more than just raw fish to taste — a range of toppings and cooking methods too.

Kaisendon at 29,000 won: building your own seafood bowl

Kaisendon served in a square container
Kaisendon | ₩29,000

The kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) came out in a lunchbox-style square container, packed neatly with raw fish and seafood.

Kaisendon, ₩29,000

Salmon, flounder, sea bream, tuna varieties, plus squid, abalone, soy-marinated shrimp, and scallop — with so many toppings over the rice, it was hard to decide what to eat first. If sushi is about enjoying each finished piece one at a time, kaisendon is about the fun of building your own bite the way you like.

Toppings added to the kaisendon

At first I just ate the raw fish piece by piece, then later ate it with rice wrapped in seaweed.

A piece of raw fish topped with flying fish roe and wasabi

Wrapping a bit of rice with the salmon in seaweed added a nice seaweed aroma to the salmon's soft, savory flavor. Adding a bit of flying fish roe and wasabi on top of the raw fish gave it a popping texture and a bit of a kick — yet another combination.

The squid had crosshatch cuts, making its chewy texture easy to enjoy. Topped with rice, flying fish roe, and crab stick, the plain squid gained extra umami. Sometimes eating the fish alone, other times piling on rice and toppings — even within the same kaisendon, the flavor shifted depending on what you paired it with, which made switching things up fun.

I also tried the fried shrimp we got from the review event. The outside was crispy while the shrimp meat inside was plump — a different texture from the sushi and sashimi.

With one bite, the savory batter gave way to a subtle sweetness from the shrimp.

Verdict: a sushi meal to pair with an Ilsan Lake Park walk

Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch was a great place to naturally follow up a walk around Ilsan Lake Park with a meal. Of the two dishes we ordered, the Luxury Sushi was fun for picking through a variety of finished sushi pieces one by one, while the kaisendon let us mix raw fish, rice, and seaweed however we liked. Thanks to the thick texture of the fish and the varied lineup, my husband and I had a satisfying meal sharing both dishes. The spacious parking lot and up to 5 hours of free parking were also a plus for us since we drove. If you're looking for a sushi restaurant near Ilsan Lake Park with easy parking, it's worth adding to your route :)
