Dakgangjeong near Gyeonggijeon for a kid's birthday trip: Mannyeon

This trip was a Jeonju trip to celebrate our second kid's birthday. Our little one is a regular viewer of a certain solo-travel show and kept singing about wanting to go to Jeonju after seeing an episode. That's how our family trip to Jeonju began, and Jeonju Hanok Village was, without question, the number one stop on the itinerary!

Jeonju Hanok Village is packed with all kinds of food, and among them, dakgangjeong (sweet and savory glazed fried chicken) is absolutely not to be skipped. This time we visited Mannyeon Dakgangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Direct Store, located right in front of Gyeonggijeon.

Where is Mannyeon Dakgangjeong in Jeonju Hanok Village, and what are the hours?

Walk a short way from Jeondong Cathedral toward Omokdae and you'll find Mannyeon Dakgangjeong right across from Ojjang — diagonally opposite! Being so close to Gyeonggijeon made it really easy to find.

It's about a 5-minute walk from Jeondong Cathedral along Taejo-ro, or about 3 minutes from the Omokdae direction, and it's near Jungang Elementary School and Seongsim Girls' Middle & High School, which make good landmarks too. The bright yellow sign really stands out, so it was easy to spot.

Mannyeon Dakgangjeong menu and side dishes

True to its name, dakgangjeong (chicken) is the main event, but they also sell shrimp gangjeong! Since we planned to have a beer with our chicken, we ordered the half-and-half dakgangjeong. Since we had kids with us, we picked mild seasoned and soy sauce!

They also sell side menu items like sotteok-sotteok, sweet potato cheese sticks, fried jjondeugi, and cheese balls. Perfect little snacks to nibble on while touring Jeonju Hanok Village.

They also sell fried jjondeugi and draft beer, and honestly, if I hadn't been driving, I really would have loved a cold draft. The foam looked thick and creamy on top of the beer. Next time I'll have to come without a car and really try it.

Soft, gently sweet dakgangjeong that kids will actually eat

When you hear "dakgangjeong," it's easy to picture something hard and spicy, but Mannyeon's version wasn't hard at all — the soft texture was what struck me most. On top of that, it wasn't spicy in the slightest and had a gentle sweetness, exactly the kind of flavor kids love.

They say they only use chicken that's prepped and fried fresh that same day, and the freshness definitely showed — there was no gamey smell or off odor at all.

We ordered half soy sauce and half mild seasoned, and while the two colors don't look very different at a glance, once you actually eat them, they definitely have their own distinct charm.

How the takeout tasted back at the accommodation

Leaving behind the disappointment of not being able to have that beer, we quickly packed it up to go and headed back to our accommodation! The wait after ordering wasn't long either, so we were satisfied to get it quickly. I'd heard it's even better once it cools down, and since dakgangjeong can easily turn hard, I was curious whether that would really be true!

Back at the accommodation, it was finally dakgangjeong-and-beer time! You can see the soy sauce and mild flavors barely differ in color, right? I kept wondering, which one's the soy sauce, which one's the seasoned — but once we tasted them, the flavors were clearly different!

Personally, I found it hard to pick a favorite between soy sauce and seasoned — both were delicious! Our kids ate both the mild and soy sauce versions well too. Neither was harsh or overpowering, with a gentle sweetness that made them perfect as a snack or as a beer pairing for the adults.

I wonder if you can tell how soft it looks just from the photos! It really wasn't hard at all — soft, sweet, with that gentle flavor lingering. According to my kid's own words, it "melts in your mouth"...
