Post-hike kimchi stew with a ramen finish in Yuseong: Jeonju House

In short

Jeonju House is a Korean restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, serving galbi kimchi stew and fresh pork belly grilled on a cast-iron pot lid. After a hike up Sikjangsan, a 4pm visit brought galbi kimchi stew with pot rice for two at 15,000 won per person, an egg roll for 10,000 won and a ramen noodle add-on for 2,000 won, with free tofu from the self-serve bar. Jeonju House is a good call on a day when a hot bowl of broth and rice is what you want after hiking or a workout.

Signature photo of galbi kimchi stew and pot rice at Jeonju House

Why we headed to Jeonju House in Bongmyeong-dong after hiking Sikjangsan

It was the weekend, so I hiked Sikjangsan (식장산) and came down wanting a really filling meal — that's how I ended up at Jeonju House. After hiking, I'm always hungrier than usual, so instead of something quick and simple, I wanted warm rice. I searched around for good Korean restaurants in Bongmyeong-dong and decided on this place because ordering the galbi kimchi stew comes with pot rice included. Once I got there, though, I found out the tofu in the kimchi stew is also unlimited refill from the self-serve bar — perfect for topping up protein after a hike!

Parking at Jeonju House and what 4pm looks like

There are two entrances to Jeonju House, and there's public street parking right in front. The road across from the entrance shown in the photo is all marked with a white solid line, so you can park nearby if you're careful about spots. That said, Bongmyeong-dong gets pretty busy in the evenings, so it's a bit of a timing game — I'd recommend going a little earlier rather than during dinner hours.

Walking inside, the restaurant was much bigger than I expected — it looked great for group dinners or family gatherings. We visited around 4pm and got seated right away with no wait.

What we ordered at Jeonju House and what it cost

Galbi kimchi stew + pot rice ₩15,000 (per person) / Egg roll ₩10,000 / Ramen noodles ₩2,000

That day we ordered two servings of galbi kimchi stew + pot rice at ₩15,000 each, an egg roll for ₩10,000, and ramen noodles for ₩2,000. We were pretty hungry after coming down from the hike, so we went ahead and got the egg roll too.

Egg roll, 10,000 won

Large, thick egg roll from Jeonju House

The egg roll came out first. It's ₩10,000, and they really didn't skimp on size — it felt worth the price. One bite in, the texture was soft and thick, and it paired well with the kimchi stew. It seemed like a good dish to share if you're visiting with a group.

Full table spread of galbi kimchi stew and pot rice

The main order was the galbi kimchi stew with pot rice. It's ₩15,000 per person, and since the stew comes with pot rice included, we didn't need to order rice separately — that was nice.

Pot of kimchi stew with short rib inside

Unlike a typical kimchi stew, this one has short rib (galbi) in it, so it wasn't just about the broth — you get meat with it too.

At the self-serve bar, you can freely grab extra side dishes or tofu to add to the galbi kimchi stew.

Galbi kimchi stew with thick-sliced tofu added

The tofu was sliced thick, so it went really well with the galbi kimchi stew. As it kept simmering at the table, the broth got richer and the kimchi got more tender, which paired nicely with the rice. Especially since we'd just come from a hike, the combination of warm pot rice and kimchi stew tasted even better than usual.

How to eat the pot rice, down to the sungnyung (scorched rice tea)

As soon as you get the pot rice, scoop the rice out into a bowl, then pour water into the pot and cover it to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea). The pot rice itself is warm and soft in that signature way — topped with kimchi stew broth and galbi, it was exactly what I needed to fill my hungry stomach after hiking.

Ramen noodles to finish the stew, 2,000 won

Ramen noodles simmered in the kimchi stew

Eating the kimchi stew, I ended up wanting to add ramen noodles too, so I ordered them for ₩2,000. Ramen noodles are such a natural match with kimchi stew that it was hard to pass up. After eating a good amount of the stew, we added the noodles and let them simmer — once the broth soaked into the noodles, it had a different feel, almost like ramen eaten while camping. Rather than adding the noodles from the start, it's better to eat some of the galbi and kimchi first, then add the ramen noodles later.

Is Jeonju House worth it as a post-hike meal?

Not having to order rice separately since the galbi kimchi stew + pot rice comes at ₩15,000 per person was convenient, and adding the egg roll and ramen noodles on top made for a really filling meal. Especially after moving your body a lot, like hiking or exercising, there are days when you crave hot soup and rice over something cold or simple — and this was exactly that kind of day. Since the kimchi stew has galbi in it, you get meat along with the broth, and with refillable tofu, protein was fully covered too. Toward the end, adding ramen noodles let us finish the kimchi stew off as a noodle dish, which seems like a great way to order if you're really hungry. If you're looking for a hearty meal in Bongmyeong-dong, Daejeon, I'd recommend Jeonju House for its combination of warm kimchi stew and pot rice.
