Daegu izakaya for spicy jjamppong hot pot and soju: Gyodong Nakwon

In short

Gyodong Nakwon is a Japanese-style izakaya on Gukchebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. After a first round elsewhere, the writer came here with a friend for the spicy Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot and yaki gyoza with soju: the fiery broth cut through the heaviness, and the gyoza were crisp outside and juicy inside. Gyodong Nakwon is a good second-round pick in Gyodong, Daegu on a night you want a rich, spicy broth and a bottle of soju.

My friend and I were looking for somewhere with good vibes and good bar food, and we ended up at Gyodong Nakwon, the izakaya in Gyodong that's been getting a lot of buzz lately. I'd wanted to go for ages because of its hip, Japan-flavored atmosphere, and visiting in person, it was even better than I expected. Spicy Osaka beef brisket jjamppong topped with bean sprouts and vegetables

How spicy is the Osaka beef brisket jjamppong hot pot?

The spicy Osaka beef brisket jjamppong I'd been waiting for arrived. The generous pile of bean sprouts and vegetables grabbed my attention instantly. Round one had been a bit heavy, but just the smell of this sharp, spicy broth seemed to cut through it.

Just looking at it made my mouth water.

As the broth bubbled away, the spicy, savory aroma spreading through the air was seriously the best. I took the first spoonful of broth and immediately felt that sharp spiciness on the tip of my tongue. But it wasn't just heat for heat's sake — there was a clean, savory depth alongside it that made it really delicious.
