In short

Hi Gelato is a gelato café on Toseong-ro near Chodang Sundubu Street in Gangneung, Gangwon. Hi Gelato's signature gelato cup

I went on a Gangwon-do trip over the weekend. The weather's been so perfect for traveling lately that just driving around put me in a good mood. After eating, I wanted something sweet, so I stopped by Hi Gelato, the Gangneung café famous for sundubu (soft tofu) gelato.

From Chodang Sundubu Street to Hi Gelato: a walkable post-meal stop

Hi Gelato is near Chodang Sundubu Street, so it was easy to pair on a Gangneung trip itinerary. Came for sundubu at Chodang Sundubu Street, ended up naturally moving on to dessert too. I'm the type who says "I'm way too full for ice cream after a meal" but eats it anyway... and this time was no exception. 😂

Arriving out front, that clean, cute vibe you get with gelato shops was right there.

The three gelato flavors ordered at Hi Gelato

What I picked at Hi Gelato were the corn gelato, sundubu gelato, and the today's gelato flavor. There were quite a lot of options on the menu, so I hesitated for a bit. Classic decision paralysis in front of the menu board again. But this time I went for something a little different.

They also thoughtfully added a free taste-topping spoon on top. That little spoon somehow makes you happy. 😆

What do sundubu and corn gelato actually taste like?

The corn and sundubu flavors had a distinctly nutty, sweet taste that came through stronger than I expected. It wasn't just a hint of corn aroma — a subtly nutty flavor kept coming through as I ate, which was fun. The names sound a bit unfamiliar, but they're surprisingly smooth once you try them. The sundubu has that clean, mild quality, so it feels a bit different from typical sweet ice cream.

Eating sundubu gelato for dessert after sundubu at Chodang Sundubu Street somehow made it feel like a proper Gangneung trip. (Definitely have the sundubu itself too.) Once I started eating, each flavor was different enough that I kept going back for more. The today's gelato flavor especially won me over.

Finishing with today's gelato: lemon sorbet

The tangy lemon flavor felt refreshingly clean in the mouth. After the nutty, smooth corn and sundubu flavors, the lemon sorbet was a nice palate switch. On a trip you keep eating one thing after another, so ending with something this refreshing felt like a good call after all.

Photo of the gelato starting to melt

I held the gelato up too long trying to get a pretty photo and it started melting, so I had to rush and eat it. 😂 With gelato, speed matters more than the photo. If you're planning to stop by Chodang Sundubu Street on a Gangneung trip, grabbing one at Hi Gelato afterward is worth it.

Which Hi Gelato flavor to pick on a Gangneung trip

The sundubu gelato especially feels like something you can only really try in Gangneung, so it's worth tasting once while you're there, and picking something familiar-yet-different like corn is fun too. If you're curious about several flavors like me, don't skip the free taste-topping spoon — that small spoon actually helps a lot with deciding.

Gelato enjoyed during a weekend Gangneung trip course

With the weather this perfect for a Gangwon-do trip, eating well in Gangneung, walking around Chodang Sundubu Street, and finishing with gelato made for a solid weekend trip course. Next time I'm in Gangneung, I think I'll pick a different flavor again.
