Suyu katsu restaurant with yuzu wasabi hire katsu: Katsu Shokudou

In short

Katsu Shokudou Suyu is a Japanese tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant on the first floor of Episode Suyu 838, a 3-5 minute walk from Suyu Station in Gangbuk, Seoul. The order was a kimchi katsu nabe set with mini udon at 18,000 won and a hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet) single dish at 14,000 won, with the tenderloin eaten in turn with yuzu wasabi, coarse salt and tonkatsu sauce, and the mini udon noodles dropped into the hot pot to finish it like kimchi udon. With a long bar counter as well as tables, Katsu Shokudou Suyu works equally well for a solo lunch or for two people sharing.

There's a huge officetel building in Suyu called Episode Suyu, and its ground-floor arcade has Sushi Ian, one of my favorite spots, along with Starbucks, Topten, and all kinds of brands packed in together — genuinely fun just to wander around.

This time I heard there was a Suyu Station tonkatsu spot inside this building that fries everything properly in the Japanese style, so Dori and I hurried over to check it out. Crispy batter, tender meat — let me tell you about this Suyu Station favorite. Here's my filling Suyu lunch report!

Is Katsu Shokudou Suyu comfortable for eating alone?

Interior and bar seating at Katsu Shokudou Suyu

Once we stepped inside, the whole place felt clean, comfortable, and well maintained. There's a generous stretch of bar seating, ideal for anyone eating solo near Suyu Station.

2-top and 4-top tables at Katsu Shokudou Suyu

There's also a good mix of 2-top and 4-top tables, so it's a solid Suyu Station spot for friends or couples too. We arrived a bit past lunch rush, in the late afternoon, and there were still plenty of people having a late lunch or an early dinner. Whenever you go, it seems like a comfortable place to settle in — a reliable Suyu tonkatsu restaurant.

Menu and prices at Katsu Shokudou Suyu

We sat down and slowly looked over the Suyu lunch menu. Every table has a touchscreen table-order tablet, and you can pay by card right at your seat — a really convenient system.

This Suyu tonkatsu restaurant is proud of its lineup — from rosu katsu (pork loin cutlet), given extra flavor through a patented low-temperature yuzu aging process, to the tender hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet). Beyond that, there's a wide range of rice bowls, curry, udon, soba, and tasty side dishes, which made writing this review a genuine pleasure. From light single dishes to filling full sets, the lineup at this Suyu Japanese restaurant is really well put together.

After some deliberation, here's what we ordered: kimchi katsu nabe set (+mini udon) ₩18,000, and hire katsu single dish ₩14,000. Total came to ₩32,000. Katsu Shokudou Suyu works just as well solo as it does split generously between two.

What comes with the 18,000-won kimchi katsu nabe set

Kimchi katsu nabe set served bubbling in an earthenware pot

The kimchi katsu nabe (hot pot) arrived bubbling away in a big earthenware pot. Honestly, just the smell and the look of it were impressive. The set comes with the kimchi katsu nabe, rice, pickled radish, cabbage salad, and mini udon, all in generous portions. You can also swap the side udon for cold soba if you prefer — worth keeping in mind when ordering.

Pot of kimchi katsu nabe filled with katsu pieces

Looking inside the pot, there were a whopping 8 thick pieces of katsu — a very generous portion.

Cabbage salad included in the set

I started fresh with a bite of the cabbage salad — the cabbage was shredded thin and fine, easy to eat, and the dressing was delicious too.

Pickled radish and spicy pickled peppers come alongside as well. If you run out, just ask staff and they'll bring more, very kindly.

Next I tried a piece of katsu soaked in the nabe broth — the meat wasn't dry at all, really tasty.

I piled on some of the well-cooked kimchi from the nabe too, and the kimchi was sweet and delicious, pairing perfectly with the katsu. The kimchi was so good I figured the broth had to be great too, so I tried that right away.

Well-cooked kimchi piled on top of the katsu

I scooped up a big spoonful of the broth — sweet, tangy with a well-fermented kimchi flavor, deep and rich, and it went perfectly with rice. For reference, I usually eat more side dishes than rice, but that day I finished my whole bowl. Of all the kimchi katsu nabe I've had, this was easily the best. It felt like I'd finally found a proper Japanese restaurant near Suyu Station.

Mini udon included with the set

The mini udon included in the set came with a generous portion of noodles too.

A spoonful of the mini udon broth

The broth wasn't the usual Japanese udon dashi we're used to — it was more subtly seasoned, with a clean, faint seaweed flavor, which honestly suited my taste even better. Dori said the broth was delicious too.

Mini udon noodles added into the kimchi katsu nabe

Wanting to mix things up even more, I dumped the entire mini udon noodles into the kimchi katsu nabe pot and simmered it into a spicy kimchi udon! Eating it this way felt like getting several dishes as one course within a single set — genuinely happy and delicious. If you want a spicy, filling Suyu Station lunch, I strongly recommend the kimchi katsu nabe.

Hire katsu single dish, 14,000 won: eating it with salt and yuzu wasabi

The hire katsu single dish set

This is Dori's order, the hire katsu single dish at Katsu Shokudou. It comes neatly plated with hire katsu, rice, udon broth, a house special sauce, and pickled radish.

✅ How to enjoy Katsu Shokudou

  • 1️⃣ First, taste the katsu's own crunch and juiciness.
  • 2️⃣ The clean, savory saltiness of Himalayan pink salt deepens the meat's flavor even more.
  • 3️⃣ Add a touch of yuzu wasabi. The bright yuzu aroma and sharp wasabi bite together for a clean, refreshing finish.

The recommended way to eat was written right on the table, so I decided to follow it exactly.

Next to the utensil holder, they'd even thoughtfully set out salt, shichimi pepper flakes, and dental floss.

Ground whole sea salt in the wasabi dish

We ground whole sea salt into the empty space of the dish that came with wasabi, getting ready to dip the meat.

A plate of nine pieces of hire katsu

The plate of hire katsu came with a generous 9 pieces. Even just looking at it, the batter looked wonderfully crisp. This particular hire katsu is made with a patented process for extra tenderness — I was looking forward to it.

A piece of hire katsu topped with wasabi

First, I tried the crispy katsu with a touch of wasabi on top — the meat was genuinely tender and delicious! The wasabi wasn't too sharp, just enough to nicely cut through the richness of the katsu.

Hire katsu dipped in salt

Next I dipped it into the salt we'd ground earlier — with the salt, the meat's own deep, savory flavor really came through even more clearly.

Hire katsu dipped in tonkatsu sauce

Lastly, I tried it with tonkatsu sauce — however you eat it, this Suyu Japanese restaurant delivers.

Nearly empty plate of hire katsu

The meat was tender, not dry at all, so we happily cleaned the whole plate. Somewhere I'd want to come back to — genuinely great quality for solo dining near Suyu Station.

Personally, I have to say the spicy, hearty kimchi katsu nabe really matched my taste best! If you're looking for a filling, delicious Suyu lunch, this place is worth a visit.
