Chicken shop in Suyu Market, Seoul: wings by the piece at Gimssi
In short
Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch is a fried chicken shop in Suyu Market, Gangbuk, Seoul, selling old-style whole fried chicken and dakgangjeong (sweet-spicy fried chicken). This takeout order was old-style whole fried chicken plus medium-spicy dakgangjeong, with one extra dakgangjeong packed as a gift; Gimssi Chicken was busy enough to need a number ticket, and the sauce was tossed in front of customers the moment the order went in. Wings and drumsticks can be bought by the individual piece, so even a small household can order without leftovers.

I stopped by Suyu Market. Suyu Market always feels lively and crowded whenever I go, haha. While wandering around looking at everything, I decided to stop by Gimssi Chicken this time.

They sell everything from dakgangjeong to old-style whole fried chicken, so it seemed like a good spot to pack food to take home from the market.
Gimssi Chicken menu in Suyu Market: dakgangjeong and chicken parts by the piece
Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch sells not just dakgangjeong but also old-style whole fried chicken and menu items by chicken part.

The dakgangjeong comes in mild, medium-spicy, and spicy, so you can pick according to your taste.

They also sell old-style whole fried chicken, and what caught my eye was that you can buy the parts you want, like wings or drumsticks, by the individual piece.

If you have a big family, you can just order a whole bird, but if there aren't many people, you can pick only the parts you want in the amount you need, which feels a lot less burdensome. Because of this, I think people looking for a budget-friendly restaurant in Suyu would find it pretty good too.
Busy enough to need a number ticket at Gimssi Chicken
There were quite a lot of customers when I went too.

You couldn't just order right away — you had to take a number ticket and wait. I guess it makes sense for a spot that's popular in the market, since there were people waiting the whole time.

While I took my ticket and waited for my turn, I looked around inside the shop, and the crispy fried whole chickens and drumsticks lined up looked really appetizing.
Dakgangjeong sauce tossed the moment you order
There was fun in just watching while I waited.
When they get a dakgangjeong order, they mix it with the sauce right in front of you. Watching them toss the freshly fried chicken with sauce right before my eyes, the waiting time didn't feel as boring as I expected.

This time I chose two things: old-style whole fried chicken and medium-spicy dakgangjeong.

And I set aside one portion of dakgangjeong separately as a gift.
Old-style whole fried chicken, tasted after a long while
I brought it home and tried the old-style whole fried chicken first.

It had been ages since I last had old-style whole fried chicken, so just packing it to take home felt a little exciting. The outside was fried crispy, and the inside was moist.
The meat wasn't dry — it had juiciness and a chewy texture, so it was delicious. In particular, eating a whole drumstick after such a long time was a real treat.

Old-style whole fried chicken really does have that satisfaction of picking it up with your hands and tearing into it.
Medium-spicy dakgangjeong you keep reaching for
I picked medium-spicy for my dakgangjeong.

It wasn't too spicy, but it wasn't bland either. Rather than a sharp spicy kick hitting all at once, the sauce blended together well overall, so I kept reaching for more.

I meant to eat just one or two pieces, but before I knew it I was grabbing another one. It felt less like any single flavor standing out and more like the chicken and sauce blending naturally together.
Did the crispiness hold up after the drive home?
I didn't head straight home after packing it up.

I stopped by a few places on the way home, so some time had passed, but the chicken's crispy texture was still holding up fairly well. The meat itself was still moist and chewy, so it was delicious. Since this place specializes in chicken, both the old-style whole fried chicken and the dakgangjeong had good meat texture.
How the gifted dakgangjeong went over
I gave the separately packed dakgangjeong to a friend.
They said it was delicious and asked where I bought it. It made me quietly proud to know I wasn't the only one who thought it tasted good.

I thought this would also be a good place to stop by for a snack or food to pack for the family while wandering around the market.
Would I order Gimssi Chicken again on my next Suyu Market trip?
This time I tried the old-style whole fried chicken and medium-spicy dakgangjeong, and it was more satisfying than I expected.

What I especially liked was being able to buy just the parts I wanted in the amount I needed, and being able to choose the spice level for the dakgangjeong too. If you're looking for good food in Suyu Market and like dakgangjeong or old-style whole fried chicken, Gimssi Chicken is worth a visit. Next time I'm at Suyu Market, I plan to try other parts I haven't had yet and pack more dakgangjeong to take home.
