I was visiting my in-laws in Pyeongtaek and went out for a family lunch after a long while. Since I'd be eating with my two-year-old, I was looking for somewhere with menu options that would be easy for a baby to eat too, and that's how I ended up at Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi in Sosabeol, Pyeongtaek. The place is spacious and the menu — pork galbi — is something the whole family tends to like, so I didn't hesitate to go. When eating out with a baby, taste matters, but so does parking, seat spacing, and having a baby chair. On those fronts, it was a pretty solid choice for a family meal.

Parking and first impressions at Ihwajeong: off the busy main strip

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi isn't tucked into the middle of a busy downtown area, so it had an easy, comfortable feel for a family visit. Best of all, the parking lot is spacious, so driving there wasn't stressful at all. When you're moving around with a baby like we were, easy parking is a genuinely big plus, and Ihwajeong made a good first impression on that front.

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi's restaurant is on the 2nd floor, and once we got up there it was bigger than I expected. The ceilings are high and the air circulation felt really good overall — for a charcoal grill place, the meat smell and smoke weren't overwhelming at all, which I liked. The tables were spaced generously, and there was a range of seating from 4-tops to larger tables for bigger groups. It seemed like a good spot both for a family outing with a baby and for a meal with parents.

High chairs and baby dishware for a two-year-old

Best of all, there were plenty of baby chairs ready to go! When you go out to eat with a baby, the chair is the first thing you look for, and it was set up to be easy to use. When we asked for baby dishware, the staff kindly brought it right out.

The self-bar and pear slush at Ihwajeong

There's a self-bar on one side where you can easily grab any extra side dishes or condiments you need. Sauces, pickled onions, and salad were all set out, so if we ran low on something while eating, we could just go get more.

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi also has pear slush for dessert. It's not too sweet, has an ice-cream-like crunch, and is smooth like a slushie at the same time. It was the perfect cool, refreshing dessert after the richness of the meat.

What banchan (side dishes) come with the meal

No pork galbi place is complete without banchan (side dishes), so I checked those out too. Rather than an overwhelming number of dishes, the lineup was clean and focused on things that pair well with meat. There was a good variety — a fresh salad, potato salad, pickled vegetables, and dressed lettuce salad. Seasoned pork galbi can get a little heavy or repetitive the more you eat, but pairing it with the tangy salad, pickles, or dressed lettuce made it much cleaner to eat.

Boneless seasoned pork vs bone-in pork galbi: which to order with a baby?

The signature dish at this Sosabeol, Pyeongtaek favorite is, true to its name, pork galbi. Looking at the menu, there are two options: seasoned pork galbi (boneless) and seasoned pork rib galbi. The rib version is the classic pork galbi style — long cuts with the rib bone attached, made tender through cross-aging. The boneless option, on the other hand, is thick-cut pork neck seasoned with a naturally sweetened sauce. Since we'd be eating with a baby and picking bones out is a hassle, we started by ordering three servings of the boneless seasoned pork galbi. Even in photos you can tell the cuts are pretty thick and mostly aged lean meat, which looked good for eating with a baby too.

How to grill it, and how the two-year-old ate

The heat was really strong, so the meat cooked fast. Because the fire is so hot, the trick with this pork galbi is to flip it quickly and often rather than letting one side cook too long. I cut off a nicely browned piece and tried it — the sweet-savory balance was well-judged and never felt heavy. Even though the meat was thick, it wasn't tough at all, which I liked. But the best part of the day was that our baby really ate well! Eating out with a two-year-old usually means agonizing over menu choices, but this time, once I cut the grilled meat into small pieces, our baby clearly enjoyed it and ate a lot.

The adults added dressed lettuce salad or pickled onion to their meat for a different flavor each time! A piece of meat topped with tangy pickled onion cuts the richness, and wrapping it in dressed lettuce adds a crisp texture — it kept things from feeling repetitive all the way through.

Finishing with cold noodles (naengmyeon)

Once we'd eaten our fill of meat, we ordered cold noodles (naengmyeon) for dessert. You really can't skip cold noodles after meat, haha. It came topped with a refreshing layer of ice shavings, which cooled down our mouths nicely after all that hot grilled meat. The base seasoning was just right even without adding mustard or vinegar — plenty tasty as is.

If you're looking for a family-friendly spot or a great pork galbi restaurant to visit with a baby in Sosabeol, Pyeongtaek, I recommend Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi! It's a spacious, comfortable place to enjoy good charcoal-grilled pork galbi with the family at a relaxed pace :)
