Jeju hanwoo restaurant open for daytime lunch: Dolgyeok Hanwoo

In short

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a Korean beef (hanwoo) restaurant in Yeondong, Jeju City, close to Jeju Airport, open for hanwoo from lunchtime onward. The writer ordered dolgyeok chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket), hanwoo galbisal, and hanwoo teuksubuwi (premium special cuts), cooking the special cuts only 80% through as the staff recommended to keep the juices. With manong pepper soy sauce, manong sauce, unlimited seaweed soup, and a carrot juice finish, this is a place worth a return visit.

Hi, this is Kkotsuni. On this Jeju trip, I was looking for a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant near Jeju Airport that would be easy to get to and let me eat hanwoo starting from daytime, and that's how I ended up at Dolgyeok Hanwoo in Jeju City. It's a place where you can enjoy domestic 1++ grade hanwoo at a relatively reasonable price, so I was really looking forward to it. This is Dolgyeok Hanwoo, a great-value hanwoo restaurant in Jeju City.

The combination of chadolbagi (beef brisket) and manong pepper soy sauce worked especially well together, and the juicy hanwoo special cuts were also delicious.

You can eat hanwoo from daytime near Jeju Airport

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is located in Jeju City, so it was convenient to get to from near Jeju Airport.

What I liked most was that you can eat meat even during the day.

When traveling around Jeju, restaurants tend to get crowded in the evenings, and meal times can get awkward depending on your itinerary, so being able to eat hanwoo from daytime made it easy to fit into a travel schedule.

The store was kept clean and had an overall lively atmosphere. The owner and staff were friendly, so even on my first visit I felt comfortable starting my meal.

Dolgyeok Hanwoo had a variety of grilled dishes beyond just hanwoo. The grilled menu included dolgyeok chadolbagi, manong galbisal, hanwoo galbisal, hanwoo teuksubuwi, and black pork cubed pork jowl.

I ordered dolgyeok chadolbagi, hanwoo galbisal, and hanwoo teuksubuwi. I wanted to try a variety of cuts evenly, so I ordered this way, and I got to enjoy a nice range of flavors.

Side dishes and manong pepper soy sauce

The side dishes at Dolgyeok Hanwoo were overall clean and neatly presented. In particular the seasoned lettuce salad went really well with the meat, and the manong pepper soy sauce properly cut through the richness of the meat. Eating a bite of meat with the lettuce salad or dipping it in the sauce made for a great combination.

This sauce is the kicker. Hehehe.

A table setting with even a little Dol Hareubang on top of the meat

As soon as the meat I ordered came out, the first thing that caught my eye was the marbling. Even at a glance the meat looked great, and it felt freshly sliced on the spot, which made me even more excited. There was even a cute little Dol Hareubang (stone grandfather statue) placed on top of the meat, which really gave it that 'eating beef in Jeju' feeling and was fun.

It also gave off the vibe of a signature beef restaurant in Jeju City.

Dolgyeok chadolbagi is the first thing I'd recommend

Of the dishes I tried, the one I'd recommend first is the dolgyeok chadolbagi. I'd suggest eating the chadolbagi first. Grilling it lightly on the pan gave it a texture that practically melted in my mouth. The savory flavor of the chadolbagi itself was great, but it was even better paired with the sauces that came with it.

Lightly cooked dolgyeok chadolbagi

First I tried it with a light dip of salt, then with wasabi. Both went cleanly with the meat, but personally my favorite combination was the manong pepper soy sauce. It cut through the savory, fatty taste of the chadolbagi so cleanly that I kept dipping into it over and over.

It has a flavor that completely cuts through any greasiness you feel while eating meat, so it paired especially well with the chadolbagi.

Hanwoo galbisal had a really nice texture

The next dish I grilled was the hanwoo galbisal. While the chadolbagi had a melt-in-your-mouth softness, the hanwoo galbisal had a great chewy texture.

It was good with wasabi, and also went well with the manong sauce. Alternating between different sauces let me enjoy slightly different flavors even from the same cut of meat.

They told me to cook the hanwoo special cuts only 80%

Personally, the dish that exceeded my expectations was the hanwoo teuksubuwi (special cuts). The staff recommended cooking the special cuts only about 80% rather than well done. So I cooked it just moderately as suggested, and it definitely had that juicy, alive feeling.

It had a soft chew and a texture full of juice, and I could really taste the distinctive flavor of hanwoo special cuts. I'd especially recommend dipping this one generously in the manong sauce.

Overall, the side dishes felt well put together to pair with the meat.

The unlimited seaweed soup was even better because it was so refreshing

And a dish that was surprisingly delicious was the seaweed soup. The broth was clean and refreshing, so it was nice to spoon up in between bites of meat. Best of all, I liked that the seaweed soup was unlimited refills.

Another thing that stood out at Dolgyeok Hanwoo was the sauces. The manong sauce in particular stuck with me — it had crushed garlic mixed in, so the flavor paired remarkably well with the meat. The sharp taste of garlic combined with the savory flavor of hanwoo meant I never got tired of eating the meat.

Manong pepper soy sauce, and pairing manong sauce with the hanwoo special cuts — it was fun finding which combination matched best with each cut of meat.

It also went really well with rice. After eating plenty of meat, having rice with the seaweed soup made for a hearty finish to the meal.

From rice dishes to Jeju bokssoju

Besides the grilled items, Dolgyeok Hanwoo also had various rice dishes prepared, which made it nice to enjoy a full meal alongside the meat.

And something fun I noticed while looking through the menu was bokssoju. It's apparently a drink made by combining bokbunja (black raspberry wine) and soju, and I thought it would be an interesting drink to enjoy alongside hanwoo in Jeju. It seems like a good option for anyone who wants to enjoy a bit more of that only-in-Jeju atmosphere.

On top of that, with manong pepper soy sauce, manong sauce, neatly prepared side dishes, and unlimited seaweed soup, it wasn't just a meal of meat and nothing else — it felt like a really full, satisfying meal.

Best of all, I liked being able to enjoy domestic 1++ hanwoo at a relatively good value. The dolgyeok chadolbagi had an impressively soft, melting texture, and the hanwoo galbisal had a savory flavor that got better the more I chewed.

And a carrot juice at the very end

After finishing the meal, they even brought out carrot juice at the end. After eating my fill of meat, it was nice to cleanse my palate with a sweet, clean carrot juice. From the meat to the meal to the final drink, the attentive care throughout was really touching.

I'd especially recommend this to anyone looking for a beef restaurant that's easy to get to near Jeju Airport, or a hanwoo place where you can eat from daytime instead of only in the evening.

Wrapping up a visit to Dolgyeok Hanwoo near Jeju Airport

This is a great fit for anyone looking for a good hanwoo restaurant in Jeju. I wanted a meal where I could enjoy quality hanwoo while keeping the price a bit lighter, and overall I was very satisfied with the condition and flavor of the meat, the store atmosphere, and the friendly service. High chance I'll be back!
