Busan rice bowl restaurant in Jangjeon-dong: oyakodon at Gatjidong

In short

Gatjidong Busan Jangjeon Branch is a Japanese rice bowl and tonkatsu restaurant in Jangjeon-dong, Geumjeong, Busan, a short walk from Oncheonjang Station. The sweet-and-spicy oyakodon kept coming to mind, so it was ordered again on this return visit along with the salmon-loaded salad and the Gatjidong signature half-and-half tonkatsu, with soup, broth and free rice refills from the self-serve bar. The oyakodon alone is worth going back for, making Gatjidong an easy pick for a filling meal in Jangjeon-dong.

Oyakodon: the sweet-spicy rice bowl worth coming back for

Oyakodon ‼️‼️ 🐔 This is the dish that made me a repeat customer 😎

Oyakodon with its sweet-spicy sauce

I kept thinking about it after my last visit, so I had no choice but to come back 🙈

Close-up of a bowl of oyakodon

The kick of oyakodon is its sweet-and-spicy sauce! It's the kind of flavor any Korean is bound to love 😍 And it's not too spicy, so people of all ages can enjoy it 🌀 The portion is generous, so I shared it with the friend I came with! Sharing made it even better 💖

Salmon-loaded salad, eaten like sushi over rice

Salmon salad piled high with onion sauce

I ordered the salmon salad again because it was so good last time! Raw salmon + sweet onion sauce + crunchy onion & cabbage = a can't-lose combo 💚 If you like salmon, you have to order this! Add a bit of self-serve bar rice, soy sauce, and wasabi on top and you basically get salmon sushi and a rice bowl in one, killing three birds with one stone ‼️ 🤤 Wasabi is served along the edge of the bowl, so if you can't handle wasabi, just ask them to leave it out before ordering!

Gatjidong's signature half-and-half tonkatsu and the cheese hourglass

Signature half-and-half tonkatsu served with an hourglass

True to its name as the signature dish, the half-and-half tonkatsu drew gasps the moment it arrived 🤭 It comes out with an hourglass ⏳, and after waiting the full minute, cutting into the cheese tonkatsu and watching the cheese ooze out is so mouthwatering ~

The sauce wasn't the usual sweet-and-sour tonkatsu sauce — it had a slight curry aroma 🍛 So it wasn't greasy at all, and I enjoyed it even more.
