Anyang Arts Park shabu-shabu: spicy full course, Ppongip Sarang

In short

Ppongip Sarang Anyang Arts Park branch is a mulberry-leaf shabu-shabu and bossam (boiled pork with wraps) restaurant that has stood for years along the walking trail at Anyang Arts Park in Anyang, Gyeonggi. The writer brought her parents and ordered the Ppongip Sarang Special shabu-shabu with the spicy broth, eating the full course of bossam, beef, vegetables and mushrooms, green mulberry-leaf kalguksu noodles and fried rice. Even after a big meal the stomach felt light, making Ppongip Sarang an easy choice for dinner with parents.

Today I want to tell you about Ppongip Sarang Anyang Arts Park branch, which I visited while taking a walk through Anyang Arts Park! Fitting the quiet, atmospheric mood of the park, this place specializes in true well-being shabu-shabu and bossam (Korean-style boiled pork wraps) that puts the goodness of mulberry leaf into every single dish. This is the story of feeling the change of season and having a meal with my parents that turned out even better than expected.

It's been sitting along the arts park trail for a long time, so it's the kind of representative Anyang restaurant that any local has probably been to at least once! I visited on an early weekday evening and got seated right away with no wait, and there's parking around Ppongip Sarang too.

What comes with the Ppongip Sarang Special shabu-shabu in spicy broth

The menu has a variety of options including shabu-shabu and bossam, and my parents and I ordered the Ppongip Sarang Special shabu-shabu. This special comes as a full course with beef, bossam, fresh vegetables and mushrooms, plus noodles and fried rice at the end — a really solid spread that's perfect for taking parents to. I'd wanted bossam too, so having it come along with everything else got me extra excited >..<

You could choose between regular or spicy broth, and we went with spicy.

Why mulberry leaf?

While waiting for the food, I looked up what benefits mulberry leaf actually has, and it turns out they're pretty impressive!?

  • Contains 10 times more GABA than green tea, which helps regulate blood pressure
  • High in DNJ, which helps lower blood sugar
  • Contains dietary fiber, good for weight management
  • Antioxidant effects and cholesterol reduction that help prevent adult-onset diseases
  • Detoxifies heavy metals

And more — knowing all this while eating makes you feel even healthier, right? Once I learned mulberry leaf was such a well-being ingredient, I decided I was definitely going to eat properly today haha.

A little while later, the broth, beef, fresh vegetables, bossam and side dishes, and the noodles and fried rice all arrived — it was so generous that just looking at it felt filling!

How was the bossam at Ppongip Sarang?

I tried the bossam that came with the Ppongip Sarang Special shabu-shabu first, and it had absolutely no gamey smell — boiled moist and tender, so it was easy to eat comfortably. Maybe thanks to the clean quality unique to mulberry leaf, there was no greasiness even after eating piece after piece, and my stomach never felt heavy through the whole meal.

The kimchi and dried radish salad served alongside the bossam weren't overly sweet or spicy either — the seasoning was balanced in a way that brought out the meat's clean, savory flavor even more, which was satisfying! Then the shabu-shabu itself, with mulberry leaf infused into the broth, had a subtle aroma up front and a deep flavor underneath.

We brought the broth to a boil first and dropped in the fresh vegetables and mushrooms one by one. Then we dipped the tender beef into the broth briefly,

and eating it together with the well-cooked vegetables, dipped in sauce too, filled my mouth with all kinds of textures and clean flavor!

An essential part of the Ppongip Sarang course is the mulberry-leaf noodles. After fishing out most of the beef and fresh vegetables and mushrooms, we added the mulberry-leaf noodles and let them bubble away — the noodles, tinted a lovely green, had a chewy, springy texture, and the broth, growing richer the longer it boiled, soaked into the noodles for a deep savory taste. I was already full, but somehow kept eating — pure magic 🪄◝✩.

And to finish it off, fried rice!

After ladling out the broth, my mom fried up the prepared rice ingredients so well that every grain of rice was coated in savory flavor — I ended up eating it all... hehe.

Is Ppongip Sarang worth taking your parents to?

My parents said they had a truly delicious, easy-on-the-stomach meal at Ppongip Sarang Anyang Arts Park branch and were completely satisfied, so I was glad I'd taken them haha. Eating out these days often leaves your stomach unsettled afterward because of heavy seasoning or greasy ingredients, but since Ppongip Sarang is built around the healthy natural ingredient of mulberry leaf, despite eating my fill, my stomach felt light and clean at the end.

Clean, tidy presentation, generous portions, and a well-being menu that considers the diner's health too — nothing was lacking, and it was a satisfying meal all around! If you're looking for a healthy place to enjoy a hearty, stomach-friendly meal with your beloved parents or family after a relaxing stroll through Anyang Arts Park, I'd definitely recommend visiting Ppongip Sarang Anyang Arts Park branch.
