Euljiro 3-ga bone BBQ, beginner spice level 1: Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui

In short

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a bone BBQ (ppyeogui) restaurant right in front of Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Arriving at 7pm with a sister trying bone BBQ for the first time, we took a 2nd-floor table and ordered the small baektan ppyeogui at 39,000 won in spice level 1, plus rice balls, Cass draft beer and a Coke; level 1 turned faintly hot only at the finish, so even weak spice eaters manage it. The meat slid off the bone at a touch of the chopsticks, and with the grilled scallions and rice balls, the wait at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui made sense.

Today I went looking for a good bone BBQ spot for my sister, who'd never had bone BBQ before. She's been taking classes near Jongno, so I searched around that area and found a bone BBQ place in Euljiro with a line out the door!! That's Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui. A place people actually queue for made me curious, so I decided to check it out. Let's get into this popular Euljiro spot, Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui.

Where is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, and what are its hours?

This Euljiro favorite sits right in front of Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station on Lines 2 and 3. If you're taking the subway, you don't even need to search for it — it's a 1-minute walk from the exit, which makes the location super convenient.

Outside and inside: the 7pm wait and a 2nd-floor table

Here's the exterior of Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, a Euljiro favorite.

The place was packed with waiting customers. You can register for a wait via Table-ring right next to the entrance.

There's a 1st floor and a 2nd floor, and I was shown to the 2nd floor. The 1st floor was already packed haha. I arrived right around dinnertime, 7pm, and got seated just as one table became available.

Lucky timing — it seems waits start building up right after 7pm.

On the stairs up to the 2nd floor there were a bunch of celebrity autographs — turns out this place was featured on the show Tasty Guys (맛있는 녀석들). There was a poster up too.

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is open year-round, and there was a hours notice posted on the way up to the 2nd floor.

The 2nd floor was smaller than the 1st, but there were still plenty of seats. I saw groups of friends, but also a lot of tables that looked like company dinners.

Be careful on the way down the stairs. *I didn't get a photo, but there's a restroom on the 2nd floor.*

I checked out the menu to figure out what to order.

What we ordered: small bone BBQ in spice level 1, rice balls, draft beer

Here's what I ordered at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui: small bone BBQ at spice level 1 / rice ball / Cass draft beer / Coke.

Ordered small spice-level-1 bone BBQ with drinks set on the table

There's a QR code at every table for ordering, but apparently some tables have trouble scanning it (mine, lol). I told a staff member and they said I could just order with them directly, so that's what I did.

Every table comes set up with cups, glasses, wet wipes, napkins and utensils.

The basic side dishes were white kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi) and salad — all really tasty. And the salad dressing was seriously good. It tasted like it had a little buldak (fire chicken) sauce mixed in!!

Our drinks and rice ball ingredients came out first.

I carefully shaped the rice ball into something pretty. It didn't have that much in it, but it was so tasty haha. What was it..? The sesame oil, maybe? I think it was seaweed flakes, mayo, sesame seeds, sesame oil and rice.

Why the scissors and tongs are for the grilled scallions

And now the star of the show — bone BBQ!! Every table had scissors and tongs, and I thought they were for cutting the bones, but they were actually for the scallion (pa) grill.

Can weak spice eaters handle spice level 1?

You don't even need to cut the bone BBQ. It's cooked so thoroughly that it's super tender — one grab with the chopsticks and the meat just slides right off. Since my sister can't handle spicy food well, we went with level 1, and even level 1 has a very slight kick. The spice hits at the very end. At first I thought, wait, this isn't spicy at all? But as I kept eating, a subtle heat crept in bit by bit.

Still, it wasn't very spicy at all, so anyone who's a total spice wimp could definitely handle it. I ate the rice ball plain with the bone BBQ at first, then toward the end mixed it into the broth — the sweetness plus that slight heat was so good. I thought it could've been even spicier, but my sister said this level was exactly right and delicious.

Is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui worth the wait?

While we were eating, a staff member came by and said, this one's on the house — pick one! There were vitamins, candy, jelly and more, so it was a small fun moment deciding what to choose.

After visiting Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, I totally understand why people line up for this place. The tender bone BBQ, which could easily feel greasy on its own, is balanced out perfectly by the scallion grill, and the rice ball adds the carb combo that made the whole meal so satisfying. We went as two people this time so we couldn't try other menu items, but I'm really curious about the cuttlefish dishes, so I'll have to try those next time. If you're looking for a good restaurant in Euljiro or Jongno, definitely give Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui a try.
