Pohang mulhoe restaurant for solo dining on a road trip: Ppwang Mulhoe
In short
Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (Korean cold raw fish soup) restaurant on Haean-ro, right in front of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. Traveling the country by motorcycle, the writer dined alone and ordered the signature Ppwang Mulhoe for 25,000 won, tasting the abalone, sea cucumber, squid and sea squirt first, then pouring in the broth and finishing with somyeon (thin wheat noodles) from the self bar. With side dishes and snacks laid out buffet-style at the self bar, one bowl of mulhoe at Ppwang Mulhoe made for a genuinely filling meal.

When you travel to Pohang, especially around Yeongildae, skipping mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) feels like missing a meal entirely, doesn't it? But once you actually search around Yeongildae, there are so many mulhoe restaurants that just picking one isn't easy. Do you go somewhere with lots of raw fish, or somewhere with a variety of seafood?

This time, after looking around Yeongildae Beach, I stopped by Ppwang Mulhoe just nearby. 😆

What I ordered was the restaurant's namesake, the Ppwang Mulhoe for ₩25,000. It's the signature dish, packing abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt into a single bowl, so it's quite different from the simple raw-fish mulhoe we usually picture ^-^
I'm traveling the whole country by motorcycle and trying the signature food of each region, and since I'd made it all the way to Pohang, I wanted to try a proper Pohang mulhoe at least once. As someone who loves seafood, it turned out to be a pretty satisfying meal. Today I'll walk through everything — location, atmosphere, the self bar, and most importantly, how Ppwang Mulhoe tastes — for anyone hunting for a good mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae. 😊

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, and where do you park? Right by Yeongildae Beach
One of the biggest perks of Ppwang Mulhoe is how close it is to Yeongildae Beach. The address is 203-1 Haean-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, right on the Yeongildae coastal road, so it's a great spot to stroll along the sea before or after eating. There's parking space in front of the restaurant, and depending on the situation, the public beach parking lot across the street is also an option. For anyone like me touring Pohang with Yeongildae on the itinerary, the flow is especially convenient.

After eating, it was easy to walk right along the sea and continue on to the Yeongildae observatory. That's exactly what I did on the day I visited — after the meal I headed to Yeongildae and took my time looking around the water, and it felt less like I'd just eaten a meal and more like I'd naturally completed one whole leg of a Pohang trip~! So for anyone looking for a good mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae, the location alone is a strong point.

Inside Ppwang Mulhoe: wider and brighter than expected
The interior was wider and had more tables than I expected from outside. When I visited, several tables were already eating, but even with plenty of customers it never felt cramped. There was decent spacing between tables, plus long seating running along the wall, making it a solid choice for families or larger groups too.
White tables, warm lighting, and pink accent touches give the whole place a bright, casual feel. Ppwang Mulhoe also offers group seating, private rooms, and reservations. It keeps that classic seaside raw-fish-restaurant vibe while still feeling like a clean, comfortable place to eat, which makes it a good fit for anyone looking for a family-friendly restaurant near Yeongildae. haha

Ppwang Mulhoe's cheat code: what's on the self bar
This isn't just a place where a single bowl of mulhoe shows up — you can help yourself buffet-style to extra food throughout the meal!! There's a self bar set up to one side, and when I visited it was stocked with kimchi, sausage, macaroni salad, stir-fried anchovies, namul (seasoned vegetable sides), and other stir-fried banchan — basically Korean-buffet level.

There was even tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes) and fried snacks. Before my mulhoe arrived, I grabbed a plate and picked up a bit of everything — spicy tteokbokki, sausage, stir-fried anchovies, and creamy macaroni salad — and honestly my hand kept reaching for more even before the main dish showed up.

The real killer feature, though, was that you can even grab somyeon (thin wheat noodles) from the self bar. 😆 Once you've eaten a good amount of the mulhoe, adding somyeon at the end naturally turns it into mulhoe-guksu (cold noodle soup), so you get to enjoy one bowl in several different ways. The self bar is set up to include somyeon along with the various banchan and snacks. So this is a Pohang mulhoe restaurant you really have to judge by the whole meal, not just by the amount of raw fish. Other places just give you a modest sashimi side spread, but this place has a full self-bar buffet... isn't that kind of amazing?

What comes in the signature Ppwang Mulhoe (25,000 won)
What I ordered was the house signature, Ppwang Mulhoe for ₩25,000. Since I'd made it all the way to Pohang, I wanted to try several kinds of seafood at once rather than just one type of raw fish. Ppwang Mulhoe includes abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt! From the moment the bowl arrived, it was clearly different from a standard mulhoe.
On a large brass bowl, the seafood was arranged in separate sections, with rice, seaweed flakes, sesame seeds, and julienned cucumber sitting in the middle. The red mulhoe sauce was layered underneath, so at first it almost looked like a bibimbap haha. It's definitely a dish where the fun is in picking out seafood with completely different textures from one bowl. But for ₩25,000... does my hometown of Incheon not have a place like this? ㅠ_ㅠ
Pour in the broth and the mulhoe transforms
At first I tried it without pouring in the broth, just lightly mixing the sauce with the seafood. In that state, it felt closer to a hoe-deopbap (raw fish rice bowl). The red sauce coats the seafood and cucumber, giving a spicy-tangy flavor up front, followed by the natural aroma and sweetness of the seafood. Then, once you pour in the broth served on the side, it turns into the Pohang mulhoe we all picture. Mixing everything thoroughly after adding the broth loosens the sauce's concentration and leaves a nicely cool, sippable soup. ^-^

What I especially liked was that it doesn't arrive already submerged in broth. That way, you can check out the seafood's own texture first, then pour in broth partway through to enjoy it as mulhoe. It's kind of like eating two different dishes in one — eat it plain, then add broth to taste as you like!

Abalone, sea cucumber, squid and sea squirt: all about the texture
Before mixing everything into a full Pohang mulhoe, I tried each seafood one at a time. The first thing that caught my eye was the abalone! Its texture — springy and snapping cleanly with each bite — is excellent. Ugh, I can still picture it. Rather than being tough or overly chewy, it had just the right amount of bounce, and it held its own presence even mixed in with everything else.

Sea cucumber was completely different from the abalone. It has that crunchy yet slightly gelatinous texture unique to it, so it stands out immediately even mixed into the mulhoe. If you're a sea cucumber fan, just getting that texture in one bowl is enough to bump up your satisfaction.

The squid had a relatively soft chewiness. It doesn't have the strong bite of sea cucumber or abalone, but the more you chew, the more a subtle sweetness comes through, pairing really well with the spicy sauce. And then there's the sea squirt. It delivers that distinctive briny ocean scent the moment it hits your mouth. This aroma can be polarizing, but if you like sea squirt, it takes the mulhoe's ocean fragrance up another level.
Abalone's bounce, sea cucumber's crunch, squid's chewiness, sea squirt's aroma. With these four constantly rotating through one bowl, the texture stays engaging all the way through instead of getting monotonous lol. So it offers a different kind of enjoyment from a typical Pohang mulhoe built around just one type of raw fish.

Add the somyeon noodles and a second dish begins
Once you've eaten a good portion of the mulhoe, stopping there would be a shame. Grab somyeon from the self bar and add it to the remaining broth. I brought back a pretty generous amount of noodles at the end, and it worked better than I expected. Drop the white noodles into the red broth, give it a few stirs, and the sauce soaks into the noodles almost instantly. If the first half was all about fishing out the seafood, the second half turns into eating a full-on spicy-tangy mulhoe-guksu. ^-^

Piling the still-crunchy cucumber and vegetables onto the noodles adds even more texture, and grabbing a last piece of leftover seafood along with it — whew, this is Pohang mulhoe. This is what a good mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae should feel like. Personally, ordering one bowl of Ppwang Mulhoe and working through seafood, rice, mulhoe, then noodles in that order is my favorite way to eat it.
At ₩25,000, it's actually competitively priced compared to other raw fish restaurants I know, and considering you get abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt plus the self bar, the overall volume of the meal is a real advantage. So this is a Ppwang Mulhoe that will especially suit anyone hunting for a proper mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae who also wants to eat a wide variety of things. haha

How is the mulhoe sauce at Ppwang Mulhoe?
Personally, the sauce is the thing I care most about in mulhoe. If it's too sweet, you get tired of it after a few bites; if the vinegar is too sharp, it drowns out the seafood entirely. Since Ppwang Mulhoe packs in such a variety of seafood, the sauce doesn't try to steal the spotlight — instead it ties all the ingredients together. Pairing it with cucumber and vegetables added a crisp, refreshing crunch, and whenever sea squirt or sea cucumber came up again, that ocean aroma surged right back. haha

There was still quite a bit of broth left toward the end, and finishing it off with the noodles wrapped things up naturally. By the time I'd chased down every last bit of seafood and vegetable at the bottom of the bowl, almost only broth was left. 😄 It really did feel like I'd properly eaten a full bowl of Pohang mulhoe.

Solo or with a group: a meal to pair with a Yeongildae trip
On the day I visited, the restaurant had everything from solo diners to families to groups of several people. For someone like me traveling Pohang alone in search of a good mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae, it felt easy to walk in without hesitation, and with plenty of tables, it also looked well suited to group dining. (There really were a lot of group tables.)
Above all, being right in front of Yeongildae matters a lot. Walking along the beach after the meal is a great way to let the food settle, and you can stroll all the way to the Yeongildae observatory too. After finishing my meal I headed out toward the sea and looked out at Yeongildae, and eating mulhoe in Pohang while catching the sea breeze is when it really hit me that I was in Pohang ^_^ The sights and the food weren't separate here — they connected into one seamless part of the trip.

The best order to eat Ppwang Mulhoe
Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae I'd recommend to anyone who prefers a variety of seafood over just one kind of raw fish. What stuck with me most about the ₩25,000 signature Ppwang Mulhoe I had was how the abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt let you keep experiencing different textures and ocean flavors within a single bowl. Add in the self bar with its many side dishes and snacks, plus the somyeon you can stir into the leftover broth at the end, and one bowl of mulhoe turns into a surprisingly filling meal.
In particular, try not pouring in all the broth right away — follow this order instead.
- Taste the seafood first
- Mix it with the sauce
- Add the broth and eat it as mulhoe
- Finish with the somyeon noodles
That was the most enjoyable way to eat Ppwang Mulhoe. If you're looking for Pohang mulhoe during your trip, or a good mulhoe restaurant near Yeongildae for a meal before or after your walk, this one is worth putting on the list :) If you want to take in the sea view at Yeongildae and enjoy a proper Pohang dish at the same time, fill out one leg of your trip with the signature Pohang mulhoe at Ppwang Mulhoe.
