There's one thing you absolutely have to eat when you visit Pohang! While hunting for a proper mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth) spot, I ended up at Ppwang Mulhoe. The spicy-tangy icy mulhoe was already amazing, but the combo with the crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside fried squid we ordered alongside it was pure art. Here's my honest review of Ppwang Mulhoe, the Pohang favorite that had me gasping after the first bite!

The pink exterior on Haean-ro

Walking along the coastal road at Yeongildae Beach, the bright pink 'Ppwang Mulhoe' sign right by the open sea catches your eye instantly. The exterior is so clean and stylish that you can spot it from far away.
Inside Ppwang Mulhoe and what the self-bar offers

The restaurant is spacious, and the pink interior gives it a bright, cheerful vibe, more like a café. The window-side tables have a wide-open ocean view, so eating while looking at the sea is really lovely. There's plenty of table space in the main hall, and there's even a private room in the back!
They've got lovely pink baby chairs that match the interior, so families with kids can eat comfortably too. The disposable aprons are also neatly prepared in pink, so you don't need to worry about splashes on your clothes!
There's a well-stocked self-bar with everything from basic side dishes to snacks. The banchan lineup is really varied — tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), assorted fried items, macaroni salad, stir-fried anchovies, braised lotus root, and more. There are also wheat noodles ready to add into the mulhoe broth as much as you like.

What comes with the basic table setting
These are the side dishes and the tteokbokki broth we grabbed freely from the self-bar. Dipping the crispy fried squid into the sweet-and-spicy tteokbokki sauce is a truly perfect combo!
One table, three dishes: Ppwang Mulhoe, squid mulhoe and fried squid

Our order — Ppwang Mulhoe, squid mulhoe, and fried squid — all arrived, making for a hearty full table! Fresh raw fish piled generously in a brass bowl, golden crispy fried squid, and the cool, sweet-and-sour icy broth on the side made for a perfect combination.

This is the restaurant's signature dish, Ppwang Mulhoe! Piled high with fresh seafood — abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt — the visuals alone were amazing. Getting to enjoy the crunchy, chewy textures of so many different types of seafood at once was really satisfying.

Squid mulhoe made with fresh squid direct from the East Sea coast, crisp vegetables, and a special house sauce.

Golden and crispy fried squid, sprinkled with parsley on top for extra appeal — freshly fried, so the outside stays crunchy while the inside keeps its chewiness.

Pouring in the icy broth and mixing in the wheat noodles
They pour the red icy broth over the Ppwang Mulhoe to taste. The finely slushed broth seeps evenly into the fish and vegetables, so every bite to the last stays savory and refreshing.

With the icy broth soaked in, this squid mulhoe looks cool enough to refresh your whole mouth just by looking at it! Scooping up a big chopstick-full, you get clear, chewy squid sashimi mixed generously with crisp pear and cucumber.

The spicy-sweet, cool broth and the squid's texture come together for a flavor that makes you gasp with the very first bite.

Ppwang Mulhoe is packed with springy abalone and sea cucumber with their standout chewy texture, plus sea-scented sea squirt and chewy squid.
The highlight of mulhoe! We piled in the wheat noodles and mixed them well through the cool, spicy-sweet mulhoe broth. Thanks to the cold broth, the noodles turn extra springy and chewy — perfect for slurping down.

The best way to eat the fried squid
Ppwang Mulhoe's fried squid (₩15,000) comes out freshly fried, still warm with a nutty aroma. The batter outside stays crispy, and the inside is packed with springy, chewy squid meat, spreading a clean, nutty flavor with every bite.
It's tasty on its own with a light dip in soy sauce, but pairing it with the sweet-spicy tteokbokki sauce or the cool mulhoe cuts through the richness and keeps you reaching for more without ever getting tired of it!

On one wall of the restaurant hang autographs from celebrities and well-known figures who've visited, proof of its reputation as a local favorite. The restroom inside is also kept clean, so you can enjoy your meal with total peace of mind.
If you're visiting Yeongildae Beach, this cool, chewy mulhoe is truly a must-try. Slurp down the fresh seafood soaked in icy broth, add in some crispy fried squid, and your Pohang trip is complete. Don't miss it if you're in the Yeongildae area — definitely worth trying!
