Jeonju skewer shop grilling to order near Gyeonggijeon: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is an octopus and chicken skewer shop a 3-minute walk from Gyeonggijeon Shrine in Jeonju. Munkkocchi's owner grilled the cheese chicken skewer and the katsuobushi octopus skewer one by one the moment they were ordered instead of reheating pre-grilled stock, and the octopus stayed tender down to the last piece. For freshly grilled skewers in Jeonju Hanok Village, Munkkocchi is a solid choice.

Today I'm introducing a Jeonju Hanok Village favorite, Munkkocchi Mungangjeong.

Where is Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch?

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is just a 3-minute walk from Gyeonggijeon Shrine in Jeonju.

Eunhaeng-ro street in Jeonju Hanok Village lined with shops

It's located among a cluster of shops, so even on my first visit it was easy to spot.

Hanok-style exterior of Munkkocchi Mungangjeong

True to Jeonju Hanok Village style, the exterior is a quaint hanok (traditional Korean house) building.

Storefront also selling slushies

Since they also sell cool slushies, there were a lot of families with kids too.

Outdoor tent-style tables beside the shop

On the side, there were a few tables set up where you could sit and eat for a bit — it had a nice yajang (open-air street stall) vibe :) 👍🏻

Every skewer is grilled after you order

Ta-da

We ordered the cheese chicken skewer and the katsuobushi octopus skewer.

Holding the received skewers

Usually with street skewers like this, they're pre-grilled and stacked up, then just handed over the moment you order, right?

Skewers being grilled fresh right after the order

But here, the owner started grilling the moment the order went in.

I could really feel the care put into grilling each one by hand, so I was already super excited before the food even arrived..!

Cheese chicken skewer and katsuobushi octopus skewer: honest review

Cheese chicken skewer piled high with cheese

First up, the cheese chicken skewer! They piled on the cheese generously, so I never ran into a cheese shortage all the way to the end.

Bite-sized cross-section of the cheese chicken skewer

No gamey chicken smell at all, and the savory sauce blended in perfectly — a flavor that people of all ages would enjoy.

Katsuobushi octopus skewer topped with bonito flakes

Next up, the katsuobushi octopus skewer! It seemed like the octopus had been boiled first and then grilled, because I could really feel how well-boiled and tender it was!!

I usually can't handle chewy squid, so I was rushing to eat it, thinking "gotta eat this fast before it gets cold!"

The last remaining piece of the octopus skewer

But surprisingly, it stayed tender all the way to the very last bite without getting chewy — I loved that.
