Samsong date-night dinner at a haejangguk restaurant: Jeju Eunhui-ne

In short

Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk Goyang Samsong Branch is a Jeju-style hangover soup (haejangguk) restaurant on the first floor of E-Pyeonhansesang City Samsong 1st Complex, right across from Starfield Goyang. On a weekday around 7pm, the visit ended a date with two bowls of haejangguk at 12,000 won each and a small 120g plate of dombe pork (boiled sliced pork) for 13,000 won, all so loaded with glass noodles, ugeoji (outer cabbage leaves), beef and seonji (blood curd) that no extra rice was needed. For a spicy hangover cure or simply a filling dinner, Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk is a reliable Samsong pick.

Why we picked Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk, a Samsong restaurant near Starfield Goyang

After finishing up a date near Starfield Goyang and looking for somewhere to eat before heading home, I found Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk! I had good memories of eating this in Jeju itself, and I was craving a spicy seonji haejangguk (beef blood hangover soup), so I dropped in to have it with dombe pork (Jeju-style sliced pork).

Even on a weekday evening it was packed with locals, and the portions of haejangguk were seriously generous — plus rice and broth refills were free, making it a great Samsong restaurant for a filling meal.

The interior was quite spacious and comfortable, decorated in a clean wood-tone style that made for a relaxed dining atmosphere. We got there a bit before 7pm on a weekday, and by the time we finished eating, the place was packed with customers. I immediately understood why this is such a popular Samsong restaurant.

Menu and prices at Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk Goyang Samsong Branch

The menu at Jeju Eunhui-ne Haejangguk Goyang Samsong Branch is simple: haejangguk / intestine soup / dombe pork. Haejangguk is made with beef, seonji, bean sprouts, and ugeoji, while the intestine soup swaps in beef tripe, seonji, bean sprouts, and ugeoji, so you can pick according to your taste. If a full portion of dombe pork looks like too much, you can order the set menu with 70g of dombe pork alongside haejangguk or intestine soup.

We ordered two bowls of haejangguk and 120g of small dombe pork. When ordering, you can ask for extra chili paste or to leave out the seonji, so if you can't eat beef blood, be sure to mention it. Also, when you order one menu item per person, rice and broth refills are free, which makes this a really filling Samsong restaurant to eat at.

Chili peppers and ssamjang served as basic side dishes

The basic side dishes were seokbakji (radish kimchi), chili peppers, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) — the peppers were pretty spicy, so be careful if you can't handle heat.

Is 120g of dombe pork enough for two to share?

The dombe pork came out first. It was 120g, but the portion looked bigger than expected, which was satisfying since it was plenty for the two of us to share alongside the haejangguk.

Small dombe pork 120g served on a cutting board

Dombe pork refers to Jeju-style pork served on a cutting board. Between the interior and the dombe pork itself, I felt like I'd briefly teleported to Jeju.

The dombe pork at Jeju Eunhui-ne had a nice balance of lean meat and fat, with a light, soft texture that stood out. Dipped in the accompanying salted shrimp, it got a briny kick that kept me reaching for more.

How spicy is the seonji haejangguk broth?

Soon the two bowls of haejangguk arrived at the same time. We didn't ask to leave out the seonji, and since one of us doesn't eat beef blood, I ended up eating that portion too.

Can you tell at a glance how generous it was — glass noodles, ugeoji, beef, all of it?

Haejangguk ingredients lifted up with a spoon

I lifted it up a little with my spoon and was surprised by how substantial the ingredients were. The glass noodles were loaded in too, and eating them before they got too soft was a small joy.

Haejangguk broth turned spicy after stirring in chili paste

I stirred in the clumped chili paste and took a first spoonful of broth — the deep savory flavor woke up my appetite right away, and the spiciness that slowly built up opened my pores. If you finish the whole bowl, it's definitely going to cure a hangover! People who can't handle spice might find it quite hot, so I'd recommend mixing in just a little chili paste at first for the best experience.

Haejangguk with bite-sized pieces of seonji

There were also several chunks of seonji, cut to a perfect bite size, and you could really taste that distinctive nutty flavor of beef blood. Taking turns — a spoonful of broth, a piece of dombe pork dipped in salted shrimp, a bite of seonji — I ended up full without even needing an extra bowl of rice.
