Half-and-half bossam at Park Man-bae Arirang Bossam, Wonheung Station Branch

I was looking for somewhere to eat near Wonheung on a weekday evening, and it turned out there's a Park Man-bae Arirang Bossam branch nearby — I remembered loving it at the main store before. I recall having to wait at the main store on my last visit, but this time, at the Wonheung Station branch, I was able to eat pretty comfortably without a wait, which made it even better.

Relaxed restaurant interior on a weekday afternoon

I visited around 5pm on a weekday, before dinner rush, so the restaurant was fairly relaxed. Maybe because it hasn't been open that long, the whole place felt clean and pleasant. It wasn't cramped either, so it seemed like a good spot for a family meal or just eating comfortably.

Menu and how to order at the Wonheung Station branch

Menu focused on bossam dishes

The menu is centered on bossam (boiled pork wraps) with a good variety of options. You can choose from the signature half-and-half bossam, cabbage bossam, kimchi bossam and more, and ordering bossam comes with a choice of either kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) or mak-guksu (buckwheat noodles) on the side, which I liked.

  • Complimentary mak-guksu (chosen)
  • Doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew)
  • Rice

We visited as a couple and ordered like this. When you order bossam, you can choose between kalguksu and mak-guksu — we went with mak-guksu this time. Kalguksu is good too, but I just can't say no to mak-guksu with bossam... haha.

Side dishes that come with the bossam

A little while after ordering, the side dishes came out first. Rather than a huge variety, they served a clean lineup focused on dishes that go well with bossam. It felt just right — simple and good for eating alongside the pork.

How tender was the gabrisal pork in the half-and-half bossam?

Finally, the half-and-half bossam we ordered arrived. Park Man-bae Arirang Bossam is known for using gabrisal (pork shoulder blade meat), and eating it, the meat really was tender.

There was no chewiness or dryness — just a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that was easy to eat without any heaviness, and the nutty flavor characteristic of gabrisal really came through. With half-and-half bossam you get to eat it with both cabbage and kimchi, so I liked that I wasn't stuck with just one way of eating it.

I especially loved putting the meat on a cabbage leaf and wrapping in some kimchi filling too. The tender gabrisal paired with crunchy cabbage and seasoning kept me reaching for more. The portion was just right for two. The bossam alone was pretty filling, and by the time we added mak-guksu and doenjang jjigae, we were completely stuffed... haha.

The complimentary mak-guksu (chilled buckwheat noodles)

Complimentary mak-guksu chosen with the bossam order

We chose mak-guksu as our complimentary side dish. Eating bossam, the flavors of the meat and kimchi can get a bit rich, but having tangy-sweet mak-guksu in between bites felt like it cleaned the palate. The seasoning wasn't too strong and paired really well with the bossam — the combination worked as well as I remembered. If you're like me and prefer alternating a bite of noodles with your bossam rather than eating just meat the whole time, this is definitely a good pick 🤍

Doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew)

Hearty-flavored doenjang jjigae

Since I feel like something's missing without soup when eating meat, we ordered doenjang jjigae too. It had that hearty, rustic doenjang jjigae flavor and went well with rice. It wasn't a particularly bold flavor, but a familiar, comforting one that anyone can enjoy easily, and it paired nicely with the bossam. A bite of meat, a spoonful of rice, and a sip of the doenjang jjigae broth — turns out soup really is essential when eating meat, haha.

How does the Wonheung Station branch compare with the main store?

Half-and-half bossam table setting compared with the main store

Since I'd eaten at the main store before, I naturally found myself comparing as I ate. Personally, I didn't notice much difference in taste. The tender texture of the gabrisal that I remembered from the main store was the same, and eating it with cabbage and kimchi was just as delicious. Most notably, I remember having to wait at the main store, but at the Wonheung branch I could get seated with practically no wait, which actually made for a more relaxed meal. I think this is a great spot to visit without traveling far if you're craving bossam near Wonheung or Samsong.

Final verdict on Park Man-bae Arirang Bossam, Wonheung Station Branch

A finished bossam meal spread

Having enjoyed Park Man-bae Arirang Bossam at the main store before, this time I tried the Wonheung branch. The combination of tender gabrisal bossam eaten with cabbage and kimchi was delicious, and adding the tangy-sweet mak-guksu and hearty doenjang jjigae made for a satisfying, filling meal. The Wonheung branch in particular has easy parking and a clean interior, so visiting by car wasn't a hassle at all. If the wait at the main store put you off, or if you're looking for bossam near Wonheung, this branch is worth a visit 🤍
