Gyukatsu restaurant near Cheolsan Station with coal refills: Hoka Hoka

In short

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and ramen restaurant in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, about 200m from Exit 3 of Cheolsan Station on Line 7. Two diners ordered the 195g gyukatsu (27,000 won) and the spicy chashu ramen (12,500 won), and Hoka Hoka served freshly fried sweet potato tempura as a free starter. The best part was that staff topped up the tabletop grill's coals without being asked, so there was no need to rush the meal.

It really feels like fall now. The evening was so pleasantly cool!! Normally I'd eat dinner at home and flop on the couch for a Netflix episode, but it was one of those days that made me want to get some air and take a walk 💖 So for dinner, we decided to finally check out a Cheolsan Japanese restaurant I'd been eyeing for a while!!

Where is Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch, and when is it open?

  • 💌 Address: 887 Oriro, 101-ho, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
  • 💌 Hours: 11:30–21:00 / weekday break 15:00–17:00
  • 💌 Parking: Available, mechanical

It's about 200m from Exit 3 of Line 7, so it's easy to walk to, and most people coming here are probably Gwangmyeong locals, right? Given how Cheolsan Station works, it's also super convenient by bus! And for us Cheolsan folks, it's even better — great for grabbing a meal and then browsing the Rodeo street, or taking a stroll along Anyangcheon stream haha.

Tables and counter seats: is solo dining comfortable at Hoka Hoka?

Inside Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch, there were table seats like this

and there were also dachi (counter-style) seats, so it'd be great for anyone who wants a Japanese vibe or wants to eat solo!!

Hoka Hoka menu and the best order combination for two

For mains, there's gyukatsu, ramen, and rice bowls, plus chicken curry set meals, tempura, and more!!! Since this place is known among Cheolsan Japanese restaurants specifically for gyukatsu and ramen, most customers seem to order the gyukatsu + ramen combo. The two of us went with the gyukatsu 195g (₩27,000) and spicy chashu ramen (₩12,500), but there's also a gyukatsu solo set (₩25,000) for solo diners, so next time I come alone I'm thinking of trying the solo dining challenge haha.

This place gives you a pre-meal service!!!

The free sweet potato tempura starter

Huh? We didn't order this....!? Nope, it's a service item! ㅇ_ㅇ Before the main menu comes out, they give you a sweet potato tempura starter. It's not tempura that's just been sitting around because it's free — it's fried fresh on the spot, crispy,,, and honestly it's crazy good ❤️😏

Our ordered dishes have arrived!!!!

Is the 195g gyukatsu enough for two people?

Hoka Hoka's 195g gyukatsu plated

I ordered the 195g planning to steal bites from my partner, and it was a wise choice haha. Even after I stole quite a bit, the portion was still generous! Just look at that gorgeous gyukatsu color.

Staff keep refilling the tabletop grill coals

You can cook it to your liking! Crispy outside, juicy inside!!

They give you plenty of fuel in your personal hibachi, but here's what impressed me most — at some gyukatsu places, the coals burn out fast, and that's fine, but when the fire weakens it gets a bit awkward to keep calling the staff over, so you end up rushing your meal.

But at Hoka Hoka, this Gwangmyeong Japanese restaurant, the staff kept checking and refilling the coals over and over before we even noticed!!

A piece of gyukatsu on the hibachi right before eating

It's so good when you grill it right before eating, isn't it? Genuinely delicious!!!!! My other half kept saying it was delicious the whole time. Totally tender and tasty :) I'm going to Osaka soon and will eat gyukatsu there, but honestly... I think the gyukatsu and ramen here in Korea taste better than in Japan! It's like they really know exactly what hits the spot for Korean palates. So I think I'll end up coming back here even after the trip. Heh heh heh.

Spicy chashu ramen: how much chashu is in the bowl?

The broth is legit good — the spicy chashu ramen

Spicy chashu ramen topped with a poached egg

I was craving spicy ramen so I ordered the spicy chashu ramen,, this was also a win!! Cracked open a poached egg and ate it with the chashu slices, yum. There's really a ton of chashu in there haha. Every time I fished out noodles, more chashu came along with it, and it kept happening until my very last bite with the chopsticks, wow.

After eating well, we walked a loop around the park and then hit up Baskin Robbins for one last calorie top-up, hehehet. I thought we'd walked quite a bit, but then filled our bellies right back up with all this delicious food ^_^ Happy to have discovered a good Cheolsan Japanese restaurant after a while — definitely going back 💌💖❤️
