Today I want to tell you about the most memorable and satisfying Korean restaurant from a recent family trip to Gyeongju — Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch (효은옥 경주본점).

When you're traveling in Gyeongju with parents or older family members, picking the right restaurant is such a big deal, right? Is parking easy, is the interior clean and comfortable, is the food deep and well-seasoned without being polarizing? Hyoeunok, this Gyeongju Bomun restaurant I visited, checked every single one of those boxes perfectly.

Where is Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch, and what are its hours?

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is at 12-6 Bukgun 3-gil, 1st floor, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk — at the entrance to Gyeongju's Bomun district, on the food street across from Donggung Park Bird Park. It's open daily 11:00–21:00, with break time from 15:30–17:00, and last order at 20:00.

Is parking easy at Hyoeunok in Bomun?

Gyeongju gets so many tourists that parking can be a real battle, but Hyoeunok has its own private lot and there's also the spacious free Bukgun-dong Public Parking Lot No. 1 right in front, so parking was incredibly convenient. That's a huge plus for new drivers or families visiting by car!

On top of that, it's a 1-minute walk from Gyeongju Donggung Park, 5 minutes from Bomun Golf Course, 10 minutes from Gyeongju World, and 15 minutes from Hwangnidan-gil, making it an ideal base for planning your Gyeongju itinerary. It's so word-of-mouth famous that it's already considered a go-to spot among Gyeongju locals.

Inside Hyoeunok: an elegant, comfortable dining room

From the outside, Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch has that classic Gyeongju roof-tile charm, and stepping inside, I was greeted by a clean interior that blends traditional Korean mother-of-pearl (jagae) detailing with a modern feel. There's also private group seating, making it a great spot for family gatherings or group meals while traveling.

The moment I stepped inside, I understood exactly why this place is known as a local Gyeongju favorite people line up for.

We ordered Hyoeunok's signature dishes — galbitang and tteokgalbi.

Hyoeunok's galbitang: big ribs and a deep, rich broth

The moment Hyoeunok's galbitang arrived, I was struck by how generous it looked. Big short rib bones filled the earthenware pot, topped with pretty egg garnish (jidan), enoki mushrooms, and green onion.

The rib meat was so tender that just touching it with tongs and scissors made the meat pull apart on its own.

There was no gamey smell at all, and the meat was so soft that it would be no problem at all for elderly family members or kids to chew.

Most of all, the broth was truly the real deal. It must have been simmered for hours in a cauldron, because it had that deep, clean flavor that just resets your whole system.

The broth had that magic quality that makes you pour a bowl of rice right into it and finish it off — I really understood why this place is beloved as a hearty, satisfying meal in Gyeongju's Bomun district.

Tasting tteokgalbi at Hyoeunok: sweet and savory in balance

Since we were in Gyeongju, we had to try a local specialty too, right? Hyoeunok's tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) was moist and perfect for sharing!

Kimchi, kkakdugi and the side dishes at Hyoeunok

At a soup specialist restaurant, the side dishes matter just as much! Hyoeunok's kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) were both delicious. The kimchi paired beautifully with the rich galbitang broth and tender meat. It was so good I refilled it several times during the meal.

Even the basic side dishes, served neatly, showed real care, and I could tell that attention to the fundamentals is what keeps regulars coming back to this hidden local Gyeongju favorite.

Verdict: is Hyoeunok a good Gyeongju restaurant for parents?

True to its stated philosophy of preparing food with the same devotion as setting a birthday table for one's parents, Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch was a restaurant where you could feel the care and hospitality.
