Daegu BBQ restaurant, kimchi jjigae and marshmallows: Sangnok Hoegwan

I visited "Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch" in Goseong-dong, near the Buk-gu Office in Daegu.

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch is on the 1st floor at 39 Goseongbuk-ro, Buk-gu, Daegu, tucked inside the Goseong-dong food alley. It's about a 3-minute walk from Buk-gu Office Station, so it's easy to reach by subway too.

🚇 By subway — Come out of Exit 4 of Buk-gu Office Station, cross the street toward the "Buk-gu Office" intersection, and walk straight into the Goseong-dong food alley. It takes about 3 minutes.

🚗 By car — Just search "Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch" in your navigation. It's convenient to park in the alley near the restaurant or at the Buk-gu Office public parking lot.

Inside Sangnok Hoegwan: round tables and an aquarium in a pork restaurant

The interior was clean overall, and the round tables made it comfortable to sit and eat. It seemed like a great spot to visit with friends, and also fine for a family dinner or a group get-together, haha.

Also, since this place sells seafood alongside meat, there was actually an aquarium inside the restaurant! It felt so unexpected to see an aquarium in a BBQ place.

What's on the menu at Sangnok Hoegwan

The menu ranged from beef to various cuts of pork, and the prices weren't too intimidating either?? There was also a good variety of seafood side dishes that seemed like they'd pair nicely with the meat!!

Which free side dishes come with the meat? Radish salad and marshmallows for dessert

The basic side dishes ranged from bean sprouts and kimchi grilled right on the griddle, to radish slices, salt, lettuce wraps, and radish salad — and the radish salad especially went amazingly well with the meat.

And they also brought out marshmallows, so I tried grilling them on the charcoal fire, haha.

At Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch, I ordered the 600g mixed pork platter. It came with a variety of cuts — pork belly, pork neck, five-layer pork, front leg, jowl, and pork skin. I was excited to try special cuts I don't usually get to eat!!

Meat grilled over charcoal barely needs an explanation — it was just so delicious. The special cuts had a crisp, springy texture plus a nutty flavor that made them especially good, and I didn't expect much from the pork belly and jowl given how affordable they were, but the balance of juiciness and lean meat was an art form.

Wrapped with the radish salad side dish, it was seriously so, so good.

Kimchi jjigae, bibim naengmyeon and generous rice refills

I went back and forth between doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and kimchi jjigae, and ended up going with the kimchi jjigae — it was packed with meat and full of tofu and vegetables, so I really enjoyed it. The kimchi was so good that the rice just kept going down.

The rice came out in such a generous portion too. These days it's rare to find a place that's this generous with rice, and a spot like this is impossible not to become a regular at.

The bibim naengmyeon also had great umami in the sauce and delivered more than a basic bowl, so I enjoyed it a lot — paired with the meat, the combo was excellent. From the meat to the side dishes, everything was so satisfying overall. Next time I'll have to come back and try the seafood menu I missed out on today, haha.
