Autumn foliage drive stop in Gwangju: Namhansanseong bakery café Sum

In short

Sum is a large bakery café on Ojeon-gil in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Stopping by on an autumn foliage drive, I had coffee and bakery items while looking out at the forest through the café's big picture windows, and with seating on the first floor, second floor and a separate annex, finding a table was easy. Sum works well as the last rest stop on a Namhansanseong outing.

When the weather gets ambiguously nice these days, you just want to grab the car and go on some kind of autumn foliage trip, haha. Staying home feels stuffy, but going far away feels like too much effort lol. So this time I drove out toward Namhansanseong for a fall foliage trip and stopped by Namhansanseong Café Sum.

There are so many cafés around Namhansanseong that I was a little torn about where to go, but I ended up here while looking for somewhere to have coffee with a view of nature. When I arrived, the place turned out to be bigger than I expected, so my first impression was already like, oh?

Driving up toward Namhansanseong: how the road to Sum feels

The road leading to Namhansanseong Café Sum itself is really different from a downtown café. Green scenery surrounds you, and as you drive deeper in, it starts to feel like an actual trip, haha. Sometimes just going to a café for coffee alone feels a bit lacking, but places like this make even the drive part of the whole experience.

If you're the type looking for a Gwangju, Gyeonggi café while also wanting to enjoy a drive, I think you'd like this atmosphere. There's parking in front of the café too, so it looked convenient for those coming by car. Looking at actual visitor reviews, a lot of people mention that the parking space is quite generous.

How big is Sum inside?

Once you step inside Café Sum, the space is pretty large. With high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, it doesn't feel cramped at all, and I liked how the outside scenery comes right into view.

When I pick a café, I do care about how the drinks taste, but I actually put a lot of weight on the atmosphere of the space too, and Café Sum felt like a good place to sit and chat for a long time.

I thought the first floor alone was already spacious, but apparently there's seating on the second floor too, plus a separate annex space. So there are multiple areas to look for a seat even if it's a bit crowded, which felt convenient, haha. It seemed especially good for families or groups visiting together.

My favorite part of Café Sum was definitely the view outside the window. Ordering a coffee and just staring blankly outside, time seems to slow down a bit.

Since I've been glued to my phone lately, moments like this actually felt really good, T.T. With all that green scenery in view, it felt like I'd stepped into the mountains even while sitting inside a café. On a nice day, I think sitting out on the outdoor terrace would also feel great. So if you're looking for a Gyeonggi Gwangju café that lets you enjoy nature and not just a pretty interior, I think Café Sum fits the bill well.

What bakery items Sum has, from mocha buns on

Café Sum also sells bakery items, so it was easy to pick out a dessert to go with a drink. When you walk into a café and catch the smell of fresh bread, it's hard to just walk past, lol.

Looking at the bread selection, my resolve to pick just one started wavering... this is the café trap, haha.

Actual visitor reviews mentioned that bakery items like the mocha bun were good, and apparently there's a space where you can warm up your bread. Rather than just quickly downing a coffee and leaving, picking a bread to go along with it and sitting for a while seemed to match Café Sum's vibe much better.

Why Sum fits a Namhansanseong drive course

What I felt after this visit is that it's better to fold Café Sum into a Namhansanseong drive course rather than making it the sole destination. A course of exploring Namhansanseong, eating something good, and finishing with a coffee break at Namhansanseong Café.

With this combo, I think it makes for a pretty decent weekend, haha. Especially if you want a change of scenery without going too far from Seoul, driving out to a Gyeonggi Gwangju café seems like a solid choice.

A quiet rest stop before heading home

Personally, I think Café Sum's biggest charm is the space itself. With a spacious interior, floor-to-ceiling windows, and natural scenery outside, just sitting there was enough to lift my mood a little.

It's the kind of place I'll think of more on a day when I want to do nothing but sip coffee and rest, rather than on a tightly packed schedule. This kind of leisure is precious these days, T.T.

Good for chatting with a friend, good to visit with family, good to stop by while out driving around Namhansanseong. Next time I want to come back on a nice-weather day and sit outside too, haha.

If you're looking for a place near Namhansanseong to have coffee while enjoying nature, Namhansanseong Café Sum is worth checking out. Especially if you're searching for a Gwangju café, a Gyeonggi Gwangju café, and want to combine it with a drive, this is a good one to add to your course.

Having a coffee and just spacing out looking at the scenery outside for a bit — turned out to be pretty great, lol.
