What is Moraenae Market in Incheon like?
Moraenae Market, located in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, started out as street stalls on sandy ground and grew from there. Since it was established in February 1988, the market has expanded steadily, with shops lining a roughly 400-meter market street. It sells fresh produce like fruit, fish and vegetables alongside groceries and household goods, and with stalls and food vendors both inside and around the market, it has that warm, lived-in atmosphere of a traditional market.

Facilities and food-safety signs at Moraenae Market
- Standard scale booth — a public scale lets shoppers weigh what they've bought themselves, helping keep transactions honest.
- Public restrooms — the market has clean, well-managed restroom facilities.
- Traditional market experience programs — banners advertise hands-on programs for students and citizens, run jointly by the Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education, the Korea Federation of Micro Enterprise, and the Incheon Senior Human Resource Development Center.
- Onnuri gift certificate refund event — supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, this event refunds Onnuri gift certificates once you hit certain spending thresholds (₩10,000 back for ₩34,000+ spent, ₩20,000 back for ₩67,000+).

Walking into Moraenae Market, the mix of footsteps and vendors calling out filled the place with that distinctive market energy. Shoppers crowded every corner, and I could feel the market's lively atmosphere firsthand.

Today I stopped by Minyeong Hwareo Gongjang Moraenae Market Branch, a well-known sushi spot in Guwol-dong.

Why is Minyeong Hwareo Gongjang takeout-only?
Minyeong Hwareo Gongjang Moraenae Market Branch has no dine-in seating — it's a sushi and live fish shop that only does takeout. The owner of this Moraenae Market sushi spot told me the story behind it, and it made sense why they run it this way. By cutting costs like rent and labor, they said, they can put more focus and money into using good ingredients.
Because turnover is fast, they can consistently use good ingredients while still keeping prices reasonable, the owner explained. What really stuck with me was hearing that they try to sell whatever they prepare that day, on that same day. Freshness matters so much for sashimi and sushi. Hearing it straight from the owner, I got the sense that there's real principle and care behind even a single piece of sushi.

The owner mentioned that a lot of customers heading to baseball games stop by too. Since the shop is close to Munhak Stadium, it seems like many people grab takeout on their way to a game.
The fish tanks and the origin-label inspection at Minyeong Hwareo Gongjang
Walking into this sashimi and Japanese-food shop in Guwol-dong, a large fish tank caught my eye right away. Rockfish and flatfish swam around fresh and lively inside, exactly what you'd expect from a live-fish specialty shop.
While I was chatting with the owner, an origin-labeling inspection team happened to show up. Watching them check the shop closely, it was clear the owner keeps up with origin labeling and management as a matter of routine, not just for show. Seeing it firsthand as a customer, it gave me a bit more confidence in the place.
On one side of the shop sat three cute maneki-neko (beckoning cat) figurines in a row. They're said to bring luck and draw in customers, and the one in the middle was wearing sunglasses, which was a fun little detail that caught my eye.

Sushi menu and prices at Minyeong Hwareo Gongjang
There was a wide variety of sushi on offer. Beyond the Special Assorted Sushi, Special Sushi, Moraenae Sushi and Omakase Sushi, there's even futomaki (thick seaweed roll), with choices like raw salmon, flatfish, engawa (fatty tuna belly) tuna, shrimp, hantchi (squid), eel and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) so you can pick whatever suits your taste.

Beyond sushi and sashimi, they also make mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) using fish prepared that same day. They use a special broth, so it sounds like a great cold bowl to try in summer.
Takeout packing with ice packs and soup broth
When I got my takeout, it came neatly packed with an ice pack inside. Freshness matters so much for sushi and sashimi, so having it packed this way put me at ease during the trip home.

They also included a packet of jangguk (savory soup broth) with the order. Just add a bit of hot water and season it to taste, they said. Noticing this kind of small detail made me feel like this is a shop that genuinely cares about customers enjoying their food, whether they take it home or to the ballpark.
Moraenae Sushi, 13,000 won
Moraenae Sushi ₩13,000

The Moraenae Sushi we picked came with 2 pieces of flatfish, 2 pieces of salmon, tuna, swordfish, hantchi (squid), egg, sweet shrimp sushi and inari (seasoned fried tofu sushi).

Trying each piece one by one, the variety made for a fun mix, and the sushi was thick and hearty overall. Clean and delicious — I enjoyed it a lot.
Omakase Sushi, 18,000 won
Omakase Sushi ₩18,000

The Omakase Sushi included flatfish, seared salmon, tuna, flatfish fin, salmon belly, tuna belly, seasoned shrimp, eel, sweet shrimp, uni (sea urchin roe), and salmon roe — quite the lineup.

Trying each piece, the flavors varied enough to keep things interesting. The soft salmon belly and the rich, savory uni were especially good, and overall everything was fresh and delicious.
