Korean bar in Seongnam for hot pot and yurin-gi: Hwieol

The atmosphere and seating at Hwieol Migeum Branch in Gumi-dong's Kkari-gil

I visited Hwieol Migeum Branch (휘얼 미금점), a Korean bar on Gumi-dong's Kkari-gil that was just perfect for a Migeum Station food-date outing.

Hours are 16:00–00:50 Sunday through Thursday, with last orders at 23:50; on Friday and Saturday, they are 16:00–01:50, with last orders at 00:50. Takeout, group visits, reservations, and parking are available, and corkage is available for a fee.

Here is the exterior of Hwieol Migeum Branch on Gumi-dong's Kkari-gil. The refined orange sign really caught my eye. I had often passed by and wondered, “What kind of place is that?”—and this time I finally got to visit! There are also seats outside where you can sit and wait for a moment if there is a line.

Once inside, the place was more spacious than I expected, with a nice variety of seating. There were private-feeling seats, solo seats, and group tables for several people, so it seemed great not only for dates but also for get-togethers with friends or company dinners. It felt comfortable with just a little atmosphere, making it a lovely space to chat over drinks.

Each table was neatly set with small plates and chopsticks, and there was a kiosk at every seat, so we could browse and order comfortably ourselves.

What we ordered and drank at Hwieol Migeum Branch

Hwieol has a range of Korean-style bar snacks based on Korean food. From makgeolli, sake, and whisky to soju, there is also a wide selection of alcohol, so it looked easy to choose a drink to suit your food. They have set menus too, which seemed convenient and a little more economical for a group. I also spotted trendy matcha and ube draft beer, plus different makgeolli, so next time I want to try another drink!

For the basic snack, we were served big shrimp crackers. They were not just ordinary shrimp crackers—they had a subtle honey-butter flavor that kept me reaching for more. They were great for nibbling on before the mains arrived :)

For our first drink, I chose Wolmae makgeolli because I had never seen it before. It looked milky and rich, so I expected it to be heavy, but it was more fizzy than I thought and pleasantly sweet, making it easy to drink. It went surprisingly well with the food.

The spicy, generous brisket jjamppong hot pot

Our first main was the brisket jjamppong hot pot, with its memorable spicy broth. As soon as it arrived, I was surprised by how much there was. The pot was packed to overflowing with ingredients, and it looked so abundant.

After letting it bubble a little longer on the burner, we had it with makgeolli. From brisket and vegetables to seafood, it contained so many ingredients that it was fun picking out bites one by one.

The soft jjamppong noodles had really soaked up the broth seasoning, so the noodles were delicious too. It was full of mussels and clams, and as someone who loves shellfish, I was totally hap-py here, haha. Spicy and generously loaded with ingredients, it was also a great dish to have with drinks.

Pollock roe cheese potato pancake, perfect with makgeolli

The second dish was the pollock roe cheese potato pancake, a perfect match for makgeolli. I picked it from the new-menu options—potato, cheese, and pollock roe? Isn’t that an unbeatable combination that cannot possibly taste bad? Haha.

I dipped the pancake generously in pollock roe mayo sauce. It added another layer of nutty flavor and a subtle heat, so it was not as rich as I expected. Cheese can easily make a dish feel heavy, but with the sauce the balance was good. With makgeolli, I could see exactly why they are called a perfect pairing!

It looked good and tasted good, so I was glad I chose it for a Migeum Station food-date menu. 👌

Yurin-gi I would order again with soju

We were fairly full, but it felt a little disappointing to leave just like that, right?! So we switched to soju, and our final order was yurin-gi that I would 100% order again.

We poured plenty of the sweet-and-tangy sauce, filled with Cheongyang chili peppers, over the fried chicken and ate it with the lettuce salad served alongside. The chicken was crisp outside and moist within, and the fried onions were especially distinctive and made it even more delicious. The tangy sauce also made it a great snack with soju.

Overall, what I liked about Hwieol Migeum Branch was its varied selection of Korean food-based bar snacks, so you can pick what you feel like having that day. The seating was comfortable and the atmosphere was nice, making it the kind of atmospheric bar restaurant to visit when you want tasty snacks and a drink on a date.

Especially if you are looking for a date spot near Migeum Station, it seems convenient because you can take care of both a meal and drinks in one place. It would be good for a casual drink with friends and also seems suitable for a larger group gathering. Above all, the menu is so varied that there were still many things I did not get to try—I want to come back next time and work through the other snacks one by one :)
