Haengridan-gil bar in Suwon for seafood tteokbokki: Ryu-eun

In short

Ryu-eun is a Korean bar on the main street of Haengridan-gil in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, serving traditional Korean liquors alongside fusion Korean dishes. Across two floors with full-height windows and a chandelier, the signature dishes are the regular flame-grilled jokbal (pig's trotters) and the seafood gareotteok-bokki, a spicy rice-cake stir-fry with baby octopus, shrimp, crab and clams — the trotters mild and smoky, the tteokbokki generous with seafood. For atmosphere and drinking food of equal quality in Haenggung-dong, Ryu-eun delivers both.

Ryu-eun's menu and what we ordered

Ryu-eun's menu includes fusion Korean dishes, pasta, and various side dishes, plus a wide selection of alcohol, so it was great for ordering food and drinks to your taste! We ordered Ryu-eun's signature grilled jokbal along with the seafood gareotteok-bokki that so many reviews had raved about.

How does the regular flame-grilled jokbal taste?

Ryu-eun's signature grilled jokbal (pig's trotters) can be ordered regular, spicy (bulljokbal), or half-and-half! Since we can't handle spicy food well, we went with the regular version haha.

A plate of Ryu-eun's regular grilled jokbal

Out came the grilled jokbal, full of smoky charred aroma! It comes with sides of dried radish strips, garlic and chili, and ssamjang (dipping sauce), and doesn't the glossy sheen from the collagen just look so appetizing haha. True to its char-grilled style, it had that smoky flavor, but with a light soy-based seasoning it was perfectly balanced — no gamey smell at all, just clean and delicious!

Seafood gareotteok-bokki: how spicy is it?

We also ordered the seafood gareotteok-bokki (rice cake stir-fry)! Since it's made with rice-based gareotteok rather than wheat, it's perfect even for people with gluten allergies, and it was genuinely delicious.

Close-up of gareotteok-bokki with octopus and shrimp

The seafood ranged from webfoot octopus to shrimp, crab, and clams — fresh seafood that let its flavor seep into the sauce base, making it really tasty! The sweet-and-spicy ratio was around 70:30, leaning more spicy, but it was a delicious kind of spicy, and combined with the chewy rice cakes and generous fish cakes, it was exactly my taste. If someone asks me 'do you want tteokbokki?' Ryu-eun is the first place that comes to mind haha.

Along with the grilled jokbal, I'd call the seafood gareotteok-bokki the best tteokbokki of my life — the quality and taste were that good.
