Kids go wild in the play room, adults relax with wood-fired grilled fish and spicy pollack roe soup — the best family restaurant in Sikjang-dong.

One of the biggest things when picking a family restaurant with kids is whether there's a play room, haha! This place has that covered along with wood-fired grilled fish and a fiery soup menu, plus a spotless, large play room. This is Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo, the Sikjang-dong restaurant everyone's talking about^.^

The exterior, location, and parking

Exterior of the standalone building on a main road

Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch sits in its own large building right on the main road near the Dongguk University Hospital intersection, so even first-timers can spot it easily from a distance, haha. There's even a dedicated parking lot, great for group gatherings!! (Parking wars are real in Sikjang-dong too ㅠ.ㅠ)

Entrance leading up to the second floor

Let's head up to the second floor~~ ^.^

A clean, wood-toned interior

Clean wood-toned interior of the restaurant
Spaciously arranged table seating
Tidy view of the dining hall

So neat and clean inside! The owner and staff were really kind too^^!

Play room and the table right next to it

The best part!! There's a play room~~~ haha, and there's a table right next to it too, haha. Super clean too~

Space with a baby chair and kids' utensils

There are baby chairs too^.^ They even have kids' spoons and forks, plus a microwave perfect for warming baby food~!

For families: the big second-floor play room

Let's take a closer look at the play room! It's spread over two levels so kids can go up and down~ and there's a slide too!

Second-floor play room with a slide and photo zone

There's a cute photo zone too haha. Kids would probably love running back and forth here haha.

The menu and what we ordered

From set menus to a variety of wood-fired grilled fish, plus pork dishes and soups~!

We ordered the wood-fired mackerel hotpot rice set for 17,000 won and the pollack roe soup set for 17,000 won^.^

What's on the self-serve bar?

Table set with the basic side dishes

They set the basic table first~ and if you want more, head to the self-serve bar~~ and honestly, the self-serve bar was really good^.^

Self-serve bar with plum tea, sikhye, and namul

Plum tea, sikhye (sweet rice punch), and a variety of namul (seasoned vegetables), plus there's even a bibimbap corner haha.

Kimchi jeon corner at the self-serve bar
Japchae prepared at the self-serve bar

The kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) is so tasty... and the japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) is delicious too ㅠㅠㅋ

Sweet and spicy tteokbokki at the self-serve bar

Wait, this tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) is seriously delicious, good enough to sell separately....!!!!!! Sweet and spicy, so tasty haha.

A generous portion of seaweed soup at the self-serve bar

Look at how much seaweed soup there is... it was so nice to eat piping hot~

Coffee corner set up at the self-serve bar
Two kinds of coffee prepared for dessert

Most restaurants have coffee near the exit, right? Here, they've put two kinds right at the self-serve bar haha. Even coffee for dessert, nice haha.

A sign posted at the self-serve bar

Haha, this is so nice, honestly. We didn't leave anything, but I loved this no-pressure kind of message too~~ haha.

How was the wood-fired mackerel hotpot rice set & pollack roe soup set?

The wood-fired oven used for grilling fish

Whoa, there's a wood-fired oven right there! I've only ever seen a wood-fired oven used for pizza, so this was surprising^.^

Mackerel grilled fresh from the wood-fired oven

And here comes the wood-fired grilled mackerel!!!!! The skin is nice and crispy and not too salty~~~ I get why people come to grilled fish restaurants now haha. Grilled directly over 500+ degree flames, the outside is crisp~~ and the inside stays juicy and moist haha. Total rice thief ㅠㅋ

Since it's a hotpot rice set, the rice comes with it too. Such a great touch!!! ㅋ The whole spread is no joke haha. Truly generous....ㅎ

Full spread of the wood-fired mackerel hotpot rice set
The pot rice served with the set

Scoop up the moist mackerel with a spoonful of rice and just chow down~~

Pollack roe soup generously filled with roe and milt

We kept sipping the hot yet refreshing pollack roe soup in between haha. The broth simmered for a long time is really fiery~~ and refreshing enough to clear you right up haha. The nutty texture of the roe as you chew paired with the spicy broth is a great combo!! The roe and milt were super fresh and generously packed^^!

My favorite tteokbokki.. no seriously, it was so good ㅠㅠㅋ. It's a real shame I got too full to finish it haha.

Sungnyung made from the pot rice with leftover mackerel

Finishing it off with sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and the last bits of mackerel too~~ haha, truly no fishy smell and delicious haha. I think kids would eat this up too~!

The kids had a blast in the exciting play room while the adults got to enjoy proper Korean food with wood-fired grilled fish — the perfect family restaurant in Sikjang-dong! If you're looking for a Sikjang-dong restaurant or a Korean food specialist, I recommend Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch~~~!!
