Gangneung fish hanjeongsik for 3 with a baby: Saimdang Bueok
In short
Saimdang Bueok is a grilled-fish hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) restaurant on Jukheon-gil, near Ojukheon in Gangneung, Gangwon. After touring Ojukheon with a baby, the writer ordered the Saimdang Han-sang set for 3 and chose one Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) and one miyeok-guk (seaweed soup); the grilled fish came off the bone easily and the mild side dishes suited the baby too. With a large parking lot and a baby chair, Saimdang Bueok made an easy family meal.

Why we chose Saimdang Bueok, a hanjeongsik spot near Ojukheon
Saimdang Bueok is a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) restaurant on Jukheon-gil 85beon-gil in Gangneung, close enough to Ojukheon to walk right over. We were traveling around Gangneung, stopped by Ojukheon, and went looking for somewhere nearby to eat — that's how we ended up here!
Traveling with a baby, taste matters but so does whether parking is easy and whether there's a baby chair — honestly those things end up mattering a lot. This place had both covered, so it worked well for a family meal. Especially recommended if you like grilled fish!

If you're looking for a good hanjeongsik spot in Gangneung, Saimdang Bueok is right near Ojukheon, so it's convenient to sightsee and then walk over for a meal. And the parking lot is generous, so there's no stress about parking!
Inside Saimdang Bueok: family tables and group rooms

When we visited it was pretty busy, but there were more family groups than I expected. The interior had plenty of seating too, felt quite spacious. Apparently group reservations are possible as well!

Since the menu itself is a Korean-style spread of many side dishes plus grilled fish, it looked like a good fit both for adults dining together and for families.

Saimdang Bueok menu

Saimdang Bueok turned out to be a real hanjeongsik gem. With so many menu combinations for the full spread, it was hard to decide what to get. After some back and forth we ordered the reasonably priced Saimdang Han-sang set for 3.
Oh, and with the Saimdang Han-sang you can choose either miyeok-guk (seaweed soup) or sundubu (soft tofu)! I went with sundubu. We ended up eating sundubu every single day of our 3-day trip, haha.

Once the food arrived, the whole table was packed full and looked really generous. When I travel I prefer a spread of many side dishes over just one dish, and here the variety was great, so it was fun trying a bit of everything.

Which side dishes are refillable at Saimdang Bueok, and which aren't
At Saimdang Bueok, braised kodari (dried pollack), butter-grilled scallops, and seasoned cockles can't be refilled, but everything else can be topped up!

Along with the grilled fish and various side dishes, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) also came out, and I thought that was tasty too. If you like grilled fish, you'll especially love this place — since grilled fish is the main dish here, it's great with rice for anyone who's a fish person.

Eating with a baby: grilled fish that comes off the bone easily
The grilled fish at Saimdang Bueok was easy to debone, which made feeding the baby much simpler. Our baby is a pretty good fish eater, so we fed her fish with rice that day too, and she ate better than expected, haha.

Eating out with a baby is tricky when the menu is too strong-flavored or there's barely anything a baby can eat. Here, between the rice, fish, and side dishes, it was easy to pick out things the baby could handle.
The jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) was seasoned just right — the adults' pick! Wrapped in cabbage leaves, it was really delicious.

Chodang sundubu and miyeok-guk, side by side
The sundubu was seasoned just right, soft and delicious. The portion was quite generous, but we finished it all.

My mom said the miyeok-guk had real depth of flavor too, haha. Our baby ate this soup really well too. Our baby is a picky eater, so I felt proud she ate so well here at Saimdang Bueok. If you're looking for a good place to eat near Ojukheon... recommended...

Baby chair and getting around: Saimdang Bueok on an Ojukheon day trip
Saimdang Bueok has a baby chair, so you don't have to hold your baby the whole meal. When you're out with a baby, it's often the case that a great restaurant has no baby chair, and one parent ends up holding the baby the entire time instead of eating. We've found that places with baby chairs make dining so much more comfortable.
It's especially convenient if you're looking for somewhere to eat near Ojukheon, since it fits neatly into the route. If you're searching for a good restaurant near Ojukheon in Gangneung and, like us, are looking for lunch or dinner after visiting, give Saimdang Bueok a try~
