Paju café after a Yulgok Arboretum walk: terrace at On the Rail

The weather turned noticeably cooler, so over the weekend we went on a family outing toward Paju.

After finishing our walk at Yulgok Arboretum, we found a café that was perfect for a light stop.

This place sits right beside the Gyeongui Line tracks toward Imjingang Station, so during the day you get a quiet view of the train tracks~

We visited on a Sunday, late afternoon, and true to a large café, the parking area was spacious and comfortable, so we could park with ease.

On the Rail basics and the ₩20,000 campfire set

On the Rail in Paju is known as a late-night café open until 2am, and the highlight here is especially the outdoor campfire time that starts at 8pm.

Order the ₩20,000 campfire set and you get firewood and aurora powder, plus marshmallows and jjondeugi taffy that kids love roasting over the fire. It's the perfect spot for a different kind of outdoor family date.

What the first floor and self-serve bar are like

Drink prices were a bit on the higher side, but considering the size of the grounds and how well-designed the space is, it felt like a fair trade-off.

For reference, on weekends and holidays it's one menu item per person, bakery items excluded — keep that in mind when you visit.

Stepping inside, the high ceilings gave a bright, open, comfortable feel with no sense of crowding. True to a bakery café, there was a wide variety of bread too.

The spacious self-serve bar had a microwave for warming up your bread.

Second-floor terrace: under-15s need an adult

The 1st-floor indoor seats were plenty nice, but since the weather was so clear, we decided to grab a spot on the 2nd-floor outdoor terrace. Looking up at it from the 1st floor, it already seemed somehow special haha.

The 2nd-floor seats boast a great view, but come with a railing installed, so it operates as a no-kids-alone zone where under-15s must be with an adult. With parents keeping a close eye, there wasn't much real risk.

Above all, the lush green view stretching over the tracks was truly a work of art^^ Maybe because the café blends in with such untouched, clear nature, we even ran into a praying mantis on the outdoor seats — hadn't seen one of those in a while haha.

We ordered an iced Americano, a vanilla latte, and a peach smoothie, and the coffee beans tasted pretty good. The peach smoothie especially, with its sweet-and-tart flavor and chewy coconut jelly bits, was a big hit with the kid. The breeze and the temperature were just right too.

A giant teddy bear doll that felt like the mascot of this place was the first photo spot we simply couldn't pass by.

There were plenty of atmospheric spots scattered throughout the café's outdoor area too. In particular, the outdoor space that recreates the old Imjingang Station using salvaged rail tracks was really something.

An old vintage jeep was on display too, so we could climb right in and take some great photos.

My mom, just like she used to with her friends when she was young, walked along the rail and played the balance game, looking as giddy as a schoolgirl reminiscing about old memories — I was so glad we brought her along.

Is On the Rail worth a family visit by day?

It was a Sunday afternoon well spent relaxing in nature. Even in the daytime it was this pleasant and pretty, so I imagine visiting in the evening — once the lights come on and the outdoor campfire gets going — would be absolutely gorgeous.
